I think you can do it all with free stuff off the internet, and here's how.
1) Get your Google Earth map saved. If you have a graphic program, great, easy, import it into that. If you don't get GIMP or INKSCAPE for free on the web and import it there.
2) Look up "Hex Grid PNG" online. Find an image like this one. http://4eyes.code66.se/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/aammap01.jpg
3) Save that file.
4) Import it to your graphic program on top of the map, and then set the opacity to about 50%. That's the quick & dirty way.
