Dear Members,
Our 19th Anniversary Tournament, held Sunday Oct. 5, was the same size as the 18th Anniversary Tournament – 24 players. It had more children than the previous year, with seven youth. There were fewer strong players than last year, perhaps because we had another tournament for them (the Seattle Pandanet City League Qualifier) two weeks earlier.
Edward Kim 7d won the Open Section, with Dong Ma 6d placing 2nd. Peter Nelson, a new arrival to Seattle, won one of his games, with Kum Kang Lee 5d, but reported that he quickly fell behind when playing Edward Kim. Still, he is playing well for somebody who was rated 3 dan in August.
In the Dan Level Handicapped Section, Ben Hakala took first place, and Chanseok Oh took second. In the Single Digit Kyu Section, Zhi Wei Chen took first place and Frank Brown took second. In the Double Digit Kyu Section, Elan Ma took first place, and Stella Oh took second. (Chanseok and Stella have the same family name, but they are not related.)
Zhi Wei Chen had a 3-0 record, and so he also won the youth award. He was playing at his AGA rating, which apparently has not caught up to his real playing strength. We hope he gets a big promotion when this tournament is rated by the American Go Association!
Regards,
Brian
