[Seattle Go Center] Two easy chairs - free!

Dear Members,

We are retiring our two fabric covered easy chairs. They are now in the Go Center first floor lobby, and are free to the first
takers. The chairs are a bit dirty, but the cushions and woodwork are still good. These chairs also have a history: they have
probably been used by more Go professionals than any other easy chairs in North America. To see if they are still available,
phone the Go Center at 206 545-1424.

Cheers,
Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Ratings Tournament This Sunday, Sept 3

Dear Go Players,

September is coming soon, and on Sunday, Sept. 3, we will be having the Monthly Ratings Tournament.  This is a great way to play some intense Go face to face. 3 rounds, Japanese rules. The tournament is free, but you need to pay for your visit to the Go Center, or be a voting member of the Go Center, or be a "new member" which gives you ten free visits.

Registration is from 10:00 - 10:45 sharp. You can call 206 545-1424 if you will run late.  If you call in, your clock starts 10 min into the first round, and after 30 min, if you do not show, you forfeit.  If you come before 12:30 and register, you will probably be able to play in the second round.

First round starts at 11 am.  Second round starts by 1:30, but may start sooner.  If your first game runs long, you do not have much time for lunch.  We recommend that you eat at the Go Center, rather than planning on going out to get lunch.  (We may be organizing take out food for this September Tournament – we will send out a second notice on that.)

AGA membership is required; please check to see if your membership is current, and try to renew it online if it needs to be updated.  More info on membership is at www.usgo.org.  You can join the AGA or renew in person at the Go Center as well, but please come early to do that.

You do not have play all three rounds - just be sure to tell the Tournament Director(s) what your plans are.

Cheers,

Brian Allen

[Seattle Go Center] New longer hours on Saturdays at the Go Center

Seattle Go Players,

For the remainder of the summer, and possibly longer, we will now be staying open until 8pm on Saturdays.

We still open at 1pm, though I'm usually there much earlier, often by noon, but never later than 12:30p (and sometimes bring Go players with me).

[Seattle Go Center] Camping trip with Go

Dear Members,

Some of us Go players are car camping the weekend of Aug. 25 – 27 at the Marble Creek campground in the North Cascades.  We are bringing both Go equipment and hiking gear, and we encourage other Go players to Go camping.  Unfortunately, all the reserved campsites were taken by early March.  However, there are 9 sites that are first-come first-served.  You might be able to get one if you come on Thursday, Aug. 24.  Deborah and I will be arriving that evening ourselves.

[Seattle Go Center] Eric Feiveson tops the 1 kyu band in the US Open

Dear Players,

Congratulations to our member Eric Feiveson, who just took first place in the 1 Kyu section of the U.S. Open Go Tournament, the biggest Go tournament in North America.  It was held at the U.S. Congress in San Diego last week. Eric’s record was 5 wins and 1 loss.

Here is a link to a cross-tabulation of all the players who were single digit kyu players or stronger.  It is organized by the band that players were in, strongest to weakest.  With my Windows computer, I use “Control F” to find names of friends who played in the tournament:

Re: [ORE] [Godlike] Mulitple actions with Multiple Actions?

Multiple actions doesn't give you multiple actions, it gives you bonus dice to your one normal roll - which you can then, of course, use to hopefully get multiple sets and thus enabling you to do more than one thing in the round.

Finally, if I link gaining Will to my Coordination (since my Multiple Actions are all hard dice) and have four actions per round, do I get 4x as many chances to gain Will as someone with only one action?

[Seattle Go Center] Breaking into Single Digit Kyu class tonight, Aug. 10

Dear Go Players

The first class of "Breaking Into Single Digit Kyu" will be today, Thursday, August 10, from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Jonathan
Cheng is "super motivated" to the class for the sole purpose of helping strong double-digit kyu players (roughly 15-10
kyu) to reach single digit kyu within months.

The structure of the class consists of primarily reviewing games of the students, and therefore it will be highly
interactive, just like a private tutoring session. Through the game reviews, you will learn:
1. Basic concepts for the beginning and mid-game
2. Solving life-and-death and tesuji problems in your games
3. Basic qualities/attitude of being a decent go player (How to win a losing game? Or give handicaps? Or play against a
stronger player?)
The class is free, and your first 10 visits to the Go Center are free. For more information on membership please go to
our membership page.
http://www.seattlego.org/membership/

I will be at the class as well, to answer questions about memberships. By the way, we can now take payment from
credit cards with chips. We have a card reader for that in the office.

Cheers,
Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Plenty of Go in Seattle

Dear Members,

This is the week of the National Go Congress in San Diego, but there are still plenty of Go players in Seattle.  Saturday was quite busy at the Go Center.  This evening, Monday, Aug 7, we have the meet-up at Hurry Curry at South Lake Union.

http://www.seattlego.org/clubs-and-meet-ups/

Tuesday at the Go Center may be a bit smaller than usual, but I’m sure everybody will find a game.  I expect we will have some out of town visitors as well.

If you want to watch games from the Go Congress, you can find them on the KGS go server.  They are usually broadcast as USGO1, USGO2, etc.  By the way, you can watch these games as a “guest” after you download the “CGoban3” client.  You do not need to register.  www.gokgs.com

The AGA also has a Youtube channel, that is broadcasting live.

https://www.youtube.com/user/USGOWeb

As I write this at 10:30 in the morning, both media have live games from the U.S. Open Master’s Division.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] From Hiroshima to Hope - Sunday Aug 6 at Greenlake

Dear Go Players,

On Sunday, Aug. 6, members of the Seattle Go Center will be going to  “From Hiroshima to Hope”, Seattle’s annual peace event honoring the victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and all victims of war and violence.   This includes floating lanterns on Green Lake at twilight, a very beautiful scene.  As many of you know, the generous benefactor of the Seattle Go Center, Iwamoto Kaoru 9 Dan, was almost killed by the Hiroshima bomb.

http://senseis.xmp.net/?AtomicBombGame

The event is held on the northwest side of Greenlake, between the Seattle Public Theatre  (the former bathhouse) and the dock.   I will set up a Go board on the grass nearby and replay the atom bomb game starting around 5:00 pm. Feel free to join me, and email me if you want me to bring a board and stones for you.

“From Hiroshima to Hope”  activities begin at 6:00 p.m. and include lantern calligraphy and folding of peace cranes. A family program with music and speakers begins at 7 p.m. The program features Tom Ikeda, founding director of Densho, an organization dedicated to preserving the story of World War II-era incarceration of Japanese Americans. Performers include the popular Japanese-American drum performance group, Seattle Kokon Taiko. The candle-lit lantern ceremony begins at 8:30 p.m. The event also includes the exhibition of artist Yukiyo Kawano's fabric sculpture, "Little Boy (folded)," a full-scale replica of the Little Boy bomb dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.

[Seattle Go Center] August Schedule: Still Open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays

Dear Members,

The Go Center has reduced hours in August, since many of our volunteers will be at the National Go Congress in San Diego.   The Monday and Wednesday evening classes are on vacation until mid-September, and  there is no Ratings Tournament in August.  However, we will be open as usual on Tuesdays (1-10), Thursdays (2-9) and Saturdays (1-7).  There will be instruction on Thursday evening.  Larry Eclipse will continue to teach beginners on a walking basis, starting at 6:30.  (He had 7 students last week.)  And Jonathan Cheng will teach a new class, for players in the 15-10 kyu range., which runs from 6:30 – 8:30.

We hope to see you soon, if you are in town.

Cheers,

[Seattle Go Center] New class for strong double-digit kyu! Thursdays 6:30-8:30pm

Hi Go Players!

Thank you to those of you who have attended my July lecture series for the Double-Digit Kyu class. Knowing that some of you are interested in my lectures, I have decided to start a Thursday evening class for the sole purpose of helping strong double-digit kyu players (roughly 15-10 kyu) to reach single digit kyu within months. I am super motivated and would like to thank Brian and the Seattle Go Center for giving me such teaching opportunity!

The structure of the class consists of primarily reviewing games of the students, and therefore it will be highly interactive, just like a private tutoring session. Through the game reviews, you will learn: 1, basic concepts for the beginning and mid-game, 2, solving life-and-death and tesuji problems in your games, 3, basic qualities/attitude of being a decent go player (how to win a losing game? Or give handicaps? Or play against a stronger player?)

If you are interested in this class, please do send me an email along with your rank so that I keep track of the progress of the attendees.

This class will start from 6:30-8:30pm on  August 10th and will occur weekly (every Thursday).

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Regards,

Jonathan (Tygem 6dan)
