PS - Professional Go players sometimes change their names at various points in their careers. For example, Kuwahara Torajiro changed his name to Shusaku in 1841 when, aged 12, he was promoted to 2 Dan (pro).
One of Shusaku's contemporaries changed his name *seven* times. Originally Todani Umetaro, at various times he was known as Dowa, Kadono Tadazaemon, Mizutani Junsaku, Ioue Shutetsu, Inoue Inseki XII, and Setsuzan.
(From "Invincible: The Games of Shusaku" by John Power. There's a copy in the Go Center library.)

[Seattle Go Center] Camping Trip with Go in North Cascades
Dear Members,
Once again, members of the Go Center will be camping at a beautiful Forest Service campground in the Cascades, Marble Creek, for a long relaxed weekend. We plan to hike and play Go. Some of us will be there starting Thursday, Aug 23, and leaving Monday morning, Aug 27. (The weekend after next.) Chris Kirschner and Marianne are coming, so we expect to have some fresh baked goods. We have room for one more tent in the sites we have reserved. Please contact me if you are interested in coming.
There are also nine “first come first served” sites at this campground. If you come in the afternoon on Thursday or Friday, you will probably get one. Unreserved campsites cost $16/night. (Bring cash)
The campsites can be used both for tenting and for small RV’s. They have picnic tables. There is no potable water, so we will be bringing in water by car. The Cascade River runs by the campground; you can boil or filter water from the river as well.
For more information on the campsite, follow this link:

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Speed League Saturday 1:15 PM
Hello Go folks,
By popular demand: Speed League tournament this Saturday, August 11th!
Registration will be Saturday, 1:15 - 1:45 PM. First round at 2:00 PM.
No cost to play, except the usual Seattle Go Center membership http://www.seattlego.org/membership/
These games are not AGA-rated, and AGA membership is not required.
Time limits will be 10 minutes main time, followed by 3 byo-yomi periods of 20 seconds. I expect that we'll play 3 rounds
in about 2.5 hours.
Players will be sorted by strength, and organized into leagues of 4 players. Each league will play a round-robin of 3
games. Each game earns a certain amount of league points. At the end of the round-robin, the league player with the
most points moves up a to the next strongest league; and the league player with the least points moves down a league.
Then next month, we meet to compete again!
I'm pretty excited about this -- it's going to be a lot of fun.

[Seattle Go Center] Open Today; Credit to Cullen
Greetings Go Folks,
Credit to Cullen
Cullen Mott has been teaching Nick Wilmes and Cat Mai for the past months, and they inform me that his excellent instruction (along with Jonathan Cheng and other Go Center teachers) helped push them over the top to attain their superb results in the US Open this year (6-0 for Cat, 5-1 for Nick). Sorry Cullen -- I didn't mean to omit you! (Remember, you too can get Go tutoring through the Go Center's Paid Private Instruction program -- http://www.seattlego.org/paid-instruction/ )
Go Center Open
The Go Center will be open today, 1:00 PM - 10:00 PM, so come get your Go on! Chris K. is still vagabonding about the east coast, so we'll again make do with bagels rather than his freshly baked bread. After Facebooking with Felipe Herman van Riemsdijk, President of the Brasil Nihon Kiin which meets at the São Paulo Go Center, I feel we can't (yet!) honestly claim "largest weekly gathering of Go players in the Western Hemisphere", because on Saturdays they usually have "about 20" players. We usually have about 25 on Tuesdays, but recently we had only 18. So we're "largest in North America"... for now!

[Seattle Go Center] Hiroshima commemoration Monday, Green Lake
Hello Go people,
Tomorrow starting at 5 PM, volunteers from Seattle Go Center will replay the "Atomic Bomb Go Game" (that was interrupted by the nuclear attack on Hiroshima, Japan in 1945), in commemoration of the victims of war, and in accordance with Iwamoto-sensei's mission of spreading cultural understanding and peace with Go.
It was the 3rd game of the third Honibo title series. Iwamoto Kaoru was challenging Hashimoto Utaro for the Honinbo title. The game is depicted on the side of the Go Center building.
We will be on the grass near Green Lake Trail, between the tennis court and the theater:
https://goo.gl/maps/TgSsaDNhzto
We will set up about 4:45, and start replaying the game at 5:00. We will finish probably about 6:00. Another organization, From Hiroshima To Hope, will begin their commemorative program of speakers, music, and floating lanterns, at 6:00.
All the best,

[Seattle Go Center] Greet the Visitors!
Dear Members,
Lots of people visit Seattle in August, and some of them are Go players. On Thursday, we had three groups of visitors,
including an enthusiastic dan level player from Korea, and Jason Cheatham from San Antonio, who has written an app for
beginning Go players who use i-phones or i-pads. (More on that later.)
I don't have any definite information for this Saturday, but I expect we will have more visitors. Come join the fun; you
never know who will come in through our door. We are open 1-8 p.m.
Cheers,
Brian

RE: [Seattle Go Center] Proofread pls? Congress; Ratings Tourn.; Hiroshima Commemoration; Basics Class
Mike:
About the "Atom Bomb" Game, Brian allowed me to study the files at the SGC. Based on what I found, Don Farrell, the author of the book, Tinian and the Bomb: Project Alberta and Operation Centerboard, asked me to write up the occasion of the "Atom Bomb" Game, and he inserted it into his book on pages 278-279. I edited the book for him, and it was published two months ago. On page 278 are two photos. One is of the position of the "Atom Bomb" Game at the time of the dropping of the bomb on Hiroshima. The other is a picture of the board that Hashimoto Utaro and Iwamoto Kaoru used on display at the Imperial War Museum in London during the museum's "Atom Bomb Game Event" on the 60th anniversary in 2005. T. Mark Hall owned the board. You may remember T. Mark from the Santa Barbara Congress. He died a couple of years after the Congress.

Hi Brian, proofread the Hiroshima part, if you don't mind -- I'm nervous about inadvertent offenses.

Hello Go people,
A few things to mention.
US Go Congress is over.
Some players at the Go Congress, students of Jonathan Cheng, had admirable records in the US Open. Cat Mai won all six of her games, and Nick Wilmes won five and lost one.
Ratings tournament Sunday.
Sunday Aug. 5 is the first Sunday of the month, so it's time to TOURNEY! Registration 10 AM - 10:45; first round 11 AM. Three rounds total (but you don't have to play all rounds -- just inform the TD of your plans). No cost (usual Go Center membership applies -- http://www.seattlego.org/membership/ for details), but AGA membership is required (see http://www.usgo.org/join-aga-today for details). Come hone your skills with us! http://www.seattlego.org/events/
Hiroshima commemoration Monday.
August 6, 1945, the founder of the Go Center, Iwamoto Kaoru 9-Dan, was playing in the Honinbo tournament near Hiroshima. The experience of surviving the nuclear attack helped inspire Iwamoto-sensei's vision of increasing peace and cross-cultural understanding via Go. On Monday, August 6, Go Center volunteers will replay the "Atomic Bomb" game at Green Lake, starting at 5 PM, prior to the "Hiroshima to Hope" commemoration. We will be on the grass near the Green Lake Trail: https://goo.gl/maps/e1R5SUE5FFn
Go Basics class Monday.
Also on Monday, August 6, the Go Center will be open 5 PM - 9 PM. Starting at 6:30, Drew Barnett will continue his series of classes on the basics of Go, aimed to help double-digit kyu players gain a firmer understanding.
