[Seattle Go Center] Simuls Tues.; opening late Thurs.; no JSIS Fri.; Go Center and coronavirus

Hello Seattle Go community,

Four things in this edition of the Weakly Kibitzer:

  • Simuls with Shingo Ono tomorrow, March 3;
  • Opening late this Wednesday, March 4;
  • JSIS Japan Night postponed;
  • Response to novel coronavirus.

Simuls with Shingo Ono, Tuesday March 3
Tomorrow, at "the largest weekly gathering of Go players in North America (possibly the Western Hemisphere)™", Mr. Shingo Ono will engage multiple opponents simultaneously!  Mr. Ono is a very strong Japanese player who has won several national and regional amateur tournaments, and we're lucky to have him visiting Seattle.  If you'd like to see him in action or experience first-hand a fraction of the power of a pro-strength amateur, the afternoon session is at 2:30pm and the evening session is at 6:30pm.  This kind of opportunity is pretty rare, so do try to come.

Opening late this Wednesday, March 4
Our afternoon Day Manager (Mingcun "Bob" Fan) is unavailable this week, so the Go Center will open at 5:00pm (not the usual 2:00pm).

JSIS Japan Night postponed
Due to concerns about flu (and possibly coronavirus), the John Stanford International School "Japan Night" is postponed.  (So, don't go to JSIS this Friday.)  It's currently rescheduled for Friday, May 29.  (So about the middle of April, I'll probably be asking for volunteers to teach Go at the event.)

Response to novel coronavirus
We have had a few inquiries about whether we'll be canceling events due to the COVID-19 novel coronavirus outbreak.  For now, the answer is "no" -- we'll go forward with our usual scheduling (including simuls with Mr. Shingo Ono tomorrow at 2:30pm and 6:30pm; and including activities with Mr. Taiki Komatsu 3P next week).  We do ask that, if you have a slight fever or a cough, or if you are sneezing a lot, please stay home until you're feeling better -- and please consult with your medical professional if you don't get better within a day or two.  Also, while at the Go Center:

  • Please wash your hands frequently, especially after using the bathroom and before eating.
  • If you have to cough, please turn away from people, and cover your mouth with your elbow.
  • If you have to sneeze, please sneeze into a tissue, throw the tissue into the trash, and wash your hands.
  • When you're done with a drinking cup or a mug, please put it in the dishwasher.

For information about coronavirus:

And, please do stay tuned as the situation evolves.

Hoping to see you soon at the Go Center,
