[Seattle Go Center] GO online; schedules; covid-19 resources

Hello, fellow Go enthusiasts, families, and friends!

In this episode of the Weakly Kibitzer -- online resources, scheduled online events, and covid-19 links.  Enjoy :-)

We hope you're staying safe, healthy, and entertained during the covid-19 ongoing crisis.  Please wash your hands; and for more information on how best to help slow the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 novel coronavirus, please see the resources near the end of this email.

The Go Center can help with the "staying entertained" part.  Find your Go friends online:

The East Coast vs. West Coast League has been slow to get going.  We have a dozen players signed up now, so expect more definitive information in the next day or two.

Meanwhile, our friends in Walla Walla have an active group on OGS:  https://online-go.com/group/651  They are starting a tournament vs. a club in Idaho this afternoon at 4:30 p.m. -- invitiations are required to join, but I think they'd be open to a player or three from Seattle to make an even field (currently 11 are signed up).

Lusha mentioned that it'd be nice to have our online events on the events calendar -- www.SeattleGo.org/events/ -- and she's right.  I know many of us use that in your daily lives, so I'll make sure it's updated.  Please let me know if you have other ideas for helping us all get through social isolation with our sanity intact (or at least not more tattered than it was before the coronavirus crisis began).

For reference, here's what will be on it:
  • Mon., 9am-12pm, Zoka regulars on KGS in the Seattle Go Center club room
  • Tue., 1pm-10pm, Go Center regulars on OGS, KGS, Discord, and Hangouts
  • Wed., 6pm-7pm, Jonathan Cheng SDK lecture on Zoom.us
    • (Also see Jonathan's YouTube channel, Go Player CJ -- 9 videos posted already!)
  • Thu., 5pm-9pm, Go Center (and Hurry Curry and Couth Buzzard?) regulars on OGSKGSDiscord, and Hangouts
  • Fri., 9am-12pm, Zoka regulars on KGS in the Seattle Go Center club room
  • Sat. April 4, 11am-5pm, Shogi regulars on Seattle Shogi Discord and 81dojo (full info on meetup.com)
  • Sat., 1pm-8pm, Go Center regulars on OGSKGSDiscord, and Hangouts

Nick Sibicky is still uploading lectures on his YouTube channel, so remember to check there.
Drew Barnett is still facilitating the Programming Computer Go sessions, online now; check the Slack channel.

Official resources to help slow down the spread of covid-19
What to do, how to do it, and what to do if you're showing symptoms (fever, dry cough, shortness of breath).  Especially if you care for someone whose health may be at elevated risk, please take a minute to review and share:
If you or someone you're caring for shows the following symptoms, it may be an emergency, according to the CDC:

When to Seek Medical Attention
If you develop emergency warning signs for COVID-19 get medical attention immediately. Emergency warning signs include*:

    • Trouble breathing
    • Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
    • New confusion or inability to arouse
    • Bluish lips or face

*This list is not all inclusive. Please consult your medical provider for any other symptoms that are severe or concerning.

Finally, here are the events that are confirmed to be canceled:
  • April 5 ratings tournament (though we might have a just-for-fun tournament online -- let me know if you'd like to play)
  • Meetups at Shoreline Library, Uwajimaya, Mox Boarding House, Hurry Curry, and Couth Buzzard
  • Sakura-Con
  • Cherry Blossom Festival at Seattle Center
  • U District Street Fair
  • Japan Fair at Meydenbauer Center
For the following events, it's currently unknown if they'll proceed as currently scheduled:
  • May 3 Spring Go Tournament
  • May 29 JSIS Japan Night
  • May 31 Youth Fun Go Tournament
  • June 13 Rengo with Pie and Coffee
  • July 18-19 Bon Odori Festival (Seattle Betsuin Buddhist Temple)

Our compassion goes to those who've fallen ill and their loved ones.  Please take care of each other - safely - and hopefully, when the Go Center can reopen for face-to-face play, the community will be that much stronger for having made it through this.

See you (later) at the Go Center,

Mike Malveaux
