[Seattle Go Center] Help with secret present!

Hello,

As you may know, our dear friend Brian Allen is retiring at the end of this year after thirteen years of service to the Seattle Go Center. Brian served as general manager and program manager to the SGC, and was involved in many other volunteer and outreach events before and during that time. To express our gratitude, we are hoping to put together a gift, a collage of photographs to be exact, to give to Brian during his retirement party. I am hoping that you will help me with this gift.

There are two things I need from you:
  1. If you are interested in participating, reply to this email and let me know you're interested! I will send followup instructions for what to do. It will involve taking a photo of yourself holding a piece of paper with a message.
  2. If you have any photos of Brian at the Go Center or at events related to the Go Center, especially group photos, I would appreciate it if you would send them to me by email. They may be included in the collage.

Please get back to me (lucylw.sgc@gmail.com) ASAP if you can help. And please don't let Brian know! This is supposed to be a surprise :D Also, if you think anyone should absolutely be involved and may not be on this mailing thread, please forward this message along.

Thanks! And let me know if you have any questions.

-Lucy

[Seattle Go Center] Introducing Our New Operations Manager

Dear Seattle Go Center Members,

I am pleased to announce that Derek McGuire will be our new Operations Manager.  He is in training now, and will take over my job at the end of this year.  Derek will usually be at the Go Center on Tuesday nights, so feel free to introduce yourself to him if you are around.

Derek was nominated by the hiring committee of Bill Chiles, Hiko Katsuhisa, and John Hogan.  The board approved his appointment at their Sept 20 meeting.

Derek was born in the California Central Valley before serving in the USAF as a mechanic and an administrator. When stationed in England, he often played games with co-workers during lunch, and it was while searching for something new that he discovered Go. Fascinated by the simplicity of its rules and simultaneous depth in strategy and style of play, it soon became a passion to introduce the game to others. After his tour of service Derek returned to California, where he would later graduate with a B.A. in English from CSU, Fresno in 2020. There, he worked to become a point of contact for existing players and those interested in learning the game, and for a time, ran a small local club.

Derek is a new arrival to Seattle, having moved here with his wife, Cassandra, who recently began a new administrative position at Seattle Central. In his free time, Derek enjoys games in general, reading, the sciences, crafting/DIY, and visiting museums and other institutions for the arts. He is currently reading from the 2002 Norwegian Book Club 100 Best Books of All Time (Bokklubben World Library), and is looking forward to developing his skills as a writer.

Please welcome Derek!

Cheers,

Brian

Brian Allen
