[Seattle Go Center] John Richards Remembrance Saturday, Oct. 1 at 1:00 PM reminder

Dear Members,

Earlier we shared the sad news that our long-time member and teacher John Richards ("JahnBoi") passed away peaceably and comfortably at Harborview Medical Center on Sunday, Aug. 7th. He was 80 years old.

Now we will be joining a remembrance of John on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 1:00 PM.  His Buddhist community will be holding a virtual memorial via Zoom, and we will be joining in from the Seattle Go Center.  We invite you to participate either by Zoom, or by coming to the Go Center.  John always liked a good sandwich at the Go Center, so we will have fresh bread by Chris Kirschner, and plenty of toppings.

We ask that all players at the Go Center on early Saturday afternoon be considerate of the Zoom memorial, and only speak when it is their turn. If you want to speak, note that your comments will be broadcast by Zoom.  At some point we will turn off our microphone to the Zoom meeting, and celebrate John with loud conversation.  At that point, regular play will resume.

[Seattle Go Center] Looking to Start Kids' Program -- PLEASE give feedback

Hey, all.  As we start to open more and have more events, we've also been looking to get back to school clubs.  I wanted to try something different since it is proving harder to find teachers / afterschool folks who can take off work at 2:30 or so.  (We are still looking for teachers for the 2-3 schools that reached out to us.)

I would love to hear from folks who would like to help start a kids' time at SGC, perhaps Sun afternoons or Sun evenings (not second Sun of the month) or every other week at some time.  We often keep Wed and Thurs for classes, but we could use one of those evenings or late afternoons too.

I'm thinking we get going with a time when mostly kids (and required parents or guardians) would come, and we could have teaching, game review, etc.  Then start to have kids' tournaments, or a league ladder if they wanted, or form teams to have team tournaments, all played over a few to several weeks as the case may be.

If this is appealing to you and your kids, please let me know your thoughts on good times.  We could start off with some seed money for snacks and so on for the first few gatherings, but after that, maybe parents could rally on that if it is desired.

I hope to hear from you!!!
Bill

[Seattle Go Center] Introducing New Operations Manager

I'm very excited to announce that we found a new Operations Manager.  Her name is River.  She and I are both learning the ropes from Brian who has graciously come out of retirement part-time for a short while to teach us the day to day business.

Here's an intro from River herself ...
-----------------------------------------------
Hi everyone! My name is River, I use she/her pronouns and I am so excited to be the new Operations Manager and look forward to seeing everyone at the center and getting to know everyone. A bit about me, I have been playing Go for about eight years now and am currently a 6K on OGS and 8k AGA; it is my hope to eventually reach at least 1 Dan! I was taught to play by a friend who wanted someone else to play with when they sat me down in front of a 19x19 board and told the basics and went from there, I have enjoyed the game ever since. I stream Go once a week on twitch; you can find me on twitch as Niaih. I stream with a good friend who is helping me get better; Hugh for those of you that might know him. I really enjoy Go and am looking forward to helping the Go Center grow and to help others find the joy that is playing this game. I enjoy reading, writing board games, and video games. My favorite book series is probably Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan, favorite board game is obviously Go, and my favorite video game is probably Final Fantasy Tactics. Well, that is enough of me rambling I look forward to meeting everyone and enjoying a game with you all!
----------------------------------------------

Please say hello to River on a Tue evening or whenever you meet.

Cheers!!
Bill

[Seattle Go Center] BIG Tournament and Party -- Mark Your Calendars !!

Hey, all.  As we try to return to normal in the tail of covid, and breathe more fun and life into SGC, we're returning to one of our big tournaments 22 OCT, Saturday.  There will be prizes, an open section for strong players (all games are even regardless of rank), and a handicap tournament.  As in the past, we'll have prizes for the open, a stronger section of the handicap tournament, a weaker section of the handicap tournament, and a kids prize.

After the tournament, we will have an anniversary party, 27 years of SGC!!!

We are still working out details, but probably the tournament will be signup at 9am, first round at 10am, and party starting around 6pm.  If you have input on the party, please send me email.  We're considering some catered food, but have to be wary of budget, and we will get a banquet license so that it can be BYOB.  SGC, might buy a few bottles of nihonshu, but not promises.  One detail we know is, even though we are loosening our covid policy in OCT, due to the expected larger turnout and AGA guidance on tournaments, participants in the tournament will need to wear masks while playing Go.  Players sit very closely and surprisingly sigh and breathe heavy often, just 2-3 feet from their opponents.  The party will adhere to the general SGC covid policy starting in OCT.

We really look forward to the strong players returning to SGC and having a big tournament as we did a few times a year before COVID.  If you don't want to play in the tournament, feel free to come early to watch the final round of strong players or any players.

Cheers,
Bill

[Seattle Go Center] Announcement for Annual Washington State Tournament Meeting Sept 27th 6:30pm

SGC is working with the AGA to try to host our first Annual Washington State Chanpionship tournament, possibly on Dec 4th, and we would like to hear from our membership on this idea. Please join us on Sept 27th, at 6:30, in person at the Go Center, to discuss key points of the tournament such as numbers of rounds, possible time limits, and entry fees. This event will be subsidized  with funds from AGA programs to support Championships and other major events, so there will be a very nice prize fund. Your input will help us create a new tradition, and shape the tournament to better fit everyone’s needs.

[Seattle Go Center] Please Help Find Next Operations Manager

Please consider friends who appreciate Go and have the unique ability to work part time with strong organizational skills and help further the mission of Seattle Go Center.  We are still looking for a new Operations Manager.

Thanks,
Bill

Subject: Seattle Go Center Looking for Operations Manager

The Seattle Go Center is looking for a part time Operations Manager, who can work 50-75 hours per month.  Very sadly, our interim operations manager is unable to remain in the position.  This position includes paying bills, doing payroll, filling out tax forms (CPAs help), doing light maintenance, supervising maintenance contracts, meeting and coordinating with the Board, etc.  This role was previously for 50 hours per month, but we want to expand the role to include creating and planning programs and other management tasks; hence the work could optionally be up to 75 hours per month. The Operations Manager should be familiar with and passionate about the game of Go, but they do not have to be a strong player.

If you are not interested, please consider friends or family who might have the right skill set and ability to not work a full-time job.  This is an important role for SGC.

If you are interested in the position, we will send you a full description of the role, pay, job requirements, and optional candidate attributes.  The Operations Manager will have use of a desk and computer in the Go Center office, and while some work can be done remotely, the Operations Manager is expected to be our "boots on the ground" onsite multiple days a week to check the property and take care of business.  The hours are pretty flexible.

The role is going to shift quite a bit in 2023 and a couple of years later.  You will be key in working with the Building Development Committee to find a temporary location for SGC during construction of our new building, and you will organize the move, including storage for SGC assets that don't move.  You will own moving back into our new space at the current location when the new building is ready.  After we move to an interim property, there are many things you would no longer need to manage (full property security, building and tenant insurance, elevator inspections, property taxes, etc.).

We will take applications at least until 16 SEP to give folks a chance to consider the role, and the personnel committee will begin interviewing as soon as we can schedule applicants on zoom (for convenience).  We hope to find a strong candidate before the end of SEP.

There will be support and help as you ramp up in the new role, but we also look for a candidate that has a good sense of self-starting who can work with directors on learning because past operations mangers may not be available for training.  There will be specific help for some tasks such as annual reporting, non-profit tax paperwork, payroll, expense reporting, etc.  There also is an operations manual for overview and some detailed how-to documents.

If you have any questions or want to discuss the role, please contact billchiles-gocenter@hotmail.com.

Thanks,

Bill

[Seattle Go Center] Seattle Go Center Property Development Update -- 01 SEP 2022

I'm dispensing with the historical format and information.  If any newer members or folks who weren't at the annual meeting have questions, feel free to email me, or check out the announcement on this google group, 15 MAY post.

I want to update our membership, as I usually do quarterly, and I need to ask folks to be careful with the info.  The Nihon Ki-in has explicitly asked us not to publish anything announcing the sale has closed before they are ready to announce.

The most important information was discussed at the annual meeting:
 * We closed the sale of the property 30 JUN.
 * Due to covid, supply chains, labor, Ukraine destabilizing financial markets, etc., our business partner needed to postpone breaking ground until SEP 2023.
 * SGC will not move to interim space until construction begins, and we have free use of the current building.
 * The Nihon KI-in has reimbursed us for various expenses to develop this deal and for some operating costs in 2022.
 * As usual, we need to do fund raising to balance the budget and to maintain our gold standard public charity status.

We are working with the Nihon Ki-in how to support Seattle Go Center, but there won't be news on that for several months.

Cheers,
Bill

[Seattle Go Center] Postponing Women+ Go Evenings, Only One Week

Hello.  We have been unable to reach and confirm a host for Women+ Evenings.  However, Lucy (who has done a lot for SGC both as a board director and as a member) said she would host a series of Women+ Evenings, start 11 SEP, Sun, 6-9pm.  Lucy is a strong player and has done a lot for SGC, both as a board director and member, to bring fun to SGC.  SGC will sponsor some food/drinks to help kick this off.  You just need to come, have fun, learn and play Go, bring friends.

Lucy committed to host the second Sun of the month, 6-9pm through 11 DEC.  If folks are enjoying the Women+ Evening, we can continue as long as someone is willing to host.

If you have any questions, please let me know, and I'll check with Lucy if I can't answer them.

Cheers,
Bill
