Dear Members,
Thursdays are continuing to be a great night for beginner's of all sorts to come and learn go for the first time, play teaching games with more experienced players that grace us with their presence, and connect with other players at or near your level.
As always, I will offer a tailored introduction to the rules for absolute beginners and for those with some experience, we'll set you up for games.
New players are always the most welcome.
Experienced players are welcome to contribute to teaching and/or find games during the night. I'm toying with the idea of having a weekly "guest" non-beginner co-host to help share what they've learned from their experience with Go. Elders, please feel free to email me ideas or just that you're planning on coming and we'll make best use of your time!
The night formally lasts from 7-9 p.m. The Go Center opens at 2:00, and Frank Fukuda is available for afternoon games. Let's Go!

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Class Monday: Opening
Greetings and Salutations!
This Monday we will again be looking at openings. Since we will be
sharing the Go Center with important people doing important meeting
things during class time, we will start by playing openings. Then when
we are free to be noisy, we can talk about the positions that arose and
discuss where things perhaps went wrong. And as usual, if you have any
specific questions, I would be happy to point you answerwards.
See you tomorrow!

usual, if you have any specific questions or games you want me to look

Tonight, July 16, we will ponder the question "How do I know for sure if this territory is mine?" and generate some thoughts around how we intuitively know versus knowing for sure.

Dear Go Players,
We will be playing Go and teaching beginners in Hing Hay Park again tonight, July 14, from 7:00 to 10:00. The event is sponsored by the Seattle Chamber Music Society. Last week it included a poetry reading by writers with International District connections, and a live broadcast of a chamber music concert from Benaroya Hall. It was a small crowd, but we had one or two teaching games going all evening.
Hing Hay Park is at 423 Maynard Ave S, Seattle, WA 98104, one street over from S. Jackson St. This is a great way to spend a warm summer evening.

[Seattle Go Center] Hing Hay tonight July 7
Dear Go Players,
We will be teaching and playing Go in the International District tonight, in Hing Hay Park at 423 Maynard Ave S, Seattle, WA 98104, from 7-10 p.m. Please join us.
The event is being organized by the Seattle Chamber Music Society. They will provide a table and chairs, and free music. The Chamber Music Society will be broadcasting a live concert that they are presenting at Benaroya Hall at the same time. (In other words, they will be setting up a sound system in the park, so people can hear the live concert that is happening in the downtown concert hall.) They are inviting other cultural groups to attend as well.
We will be teaching from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. After the concert begins at 8:00, we can keep playing, but there should be less talking. It should be very pleasant. We will also be doing this on the evening of Monday, July 14.
Note: we will be continuing our Wednesday outreach and meet-up at the Uwajimaya Food Court in the International District on Wednesday evenings. We meet from 6-8 p.m. – look for Dennis Wheeler.

[Seattle Go Center] Ratings Tournament this Sunday, July 6
Dear Go Players,
Our Monthly Ratings Tournament is this Sunday, July 6, at the Go Center, with registration from 12:00 to 12:45. This is a great way to play some intense Go face to face.
On Sundays, you may park anywhere in our parking lot. We have 3 rounds, Japanese rules. You do not have play all three rounds - just be sure to tell the Tournament Director what your plans are. The last round should finish around 6:30 or 7:00 pm. The tournament is free, but you need to pay for your visit to the Go Center, or be a voting member of the Go Center, or be a "new member" which gives you ten free visits.
AGA membership is required since this is for the American Go Association ratings; please check to see if your membership is current, and try to renew it online if it needs to be updated. More info on membership is at www.usgo.org (Note: if you just want to check your membership status, you can use the ratings page for that: http://www.usgo.org/search-ratings. You do not need a password for this.) You can join the AGA or renew in person at the Go Center as well, but please come early to do that.
If your first game runs long, you do not have much time for lunch. We recommend that you bring food to the Go Center, rather than planning on going out to get lunch.
Cheers,
Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Eastside Go
Hello Eastside Go players,
We continue to have steady attendance into the summer months, with most weeks seeing multiple kyu-level and dan-level players. Come join us on Thursday evenings at the Crossroads mall.
The Thursday meetup starts at 5:30 most weeks. Please note that the official starting time is at 6:00; most of the time we start early, but we can't always guarantee a volunteer will be there early. If you show up before 6:00 and no one is there yet, we should have someone there to set up soon.
If you'd like to volunteer to help organize the meetups, please contact me directly.
Thanks,
Thane
[Seattle Go Center] Carlos is teaching the Thursday Beginner's Class
Dear Go Players,
Please remind your friends who are interested in Go that we have an ongoing Beginner’s Class on Thursdays, starting at 7:00. New players may begin any week.
This week, Carlos Encalada will start teaching the Beginner’s Class. Frank Lam will soon be taking some time off. (Frank lives on sailboat, and it is summertime.) We thank Frank for his dedication to the Beginner Class, both in person, and with his website: http://go.almostflan.com/
Carlos has also helped us with Go Clubs at Hamilton Middle School, and at McDonald Elementary. He has a BA in Computer Science from MIT (2004), a teaching certification for high school mathematics, and a Masters in Social Work from Smith College (2012). With extensive teaching experience, and many other interests, Carlos hopes to gently inspire beginners to enter into this lovely game and into a great community.
Cheers,
Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Open Thurs, Sat; Tournament on Sunday July 6
Dear Go Players,
We will be staying open during the July 4th holiday weekend. We will be open our regular hours on Thursday, July 3, from 2-9 pm, with the Beginners Class at 7:00 p.m. And we will be open Saturday, July 5, from 2-7 pm. On Sunday, we have the Monthly Ratings Tournament, with registration from 12:00 - 12:45 pm. We expect the three rounds to last until about 6:30. As usual, we are closed on Fridays.
Enjoy the fine weather, and take a walk or a bike ride over to the Go Center. We have plenty of cool drinks, and air conditioning as well.
Cheers,
Brian
