[Seattle Go Center] Annual Meeting Sunday April 15

Dear Members,

Usually we have the Annual Member’s Meeting in late March.  But this year, we have scheduled the Annual Meeting for Sunday, April 15 at two p.m. because of the pro visit by Chang Ruei Jie, March 16 – March 23, and of Sakura Con on the weekend of March 30 – April 1.

This is our annual 1 hr. meeting to review the last year, and to elect some new board members. We will have a slide show, discussion, and some treats. All members, including new members, are welcome at the meeting. Voting is limited to those who have quarterly, annual or lifetime memberships.  If you are not elected to the Board, which has another meeting, you can play Go the rest of the afternoon.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Ratings Tournaments March 4 and April 8

Dear Go Players,

Our next Monthly Ratings Tournament will be on Sunday, March 4, with registration from 10 – 10:45 am.   But watch out!  The next ratings tournament after that will not be on the first Sunday of April.  Instead, it will be on Sunday,
April 8.  This huge break with tradition is happening because the big manga and anime festival, Sakura Con,  is happening the previous weekend, including Sunday, April 1.   That is also Easter Sunday.

We have a lot happening in the next two months!  The full schedule is here:

http://www.seattlego.org/events/

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] SDK workshop: invading common openings

Hi folks,

For tomorrow's SDK workshop, the topic is how to invade and handle invasions for common openings like Chinese and Kobayashi. We'll discuss strategies for responding to invasions with different board positions, and look at a number of exemplary followup sequences.

I hope you'll join us. Doors open at 6p, and the workshop starts at 6:30p. Afterwards, there will be time for some games.

See you then!

[Seattle Go Center] Sakura Con Volunteers Needed

Dear Members,

Once again, we will be teaching and sharing the game of Go at the Sakura-Con, which is happening this year on Friday, March 30 through Sunday, April 1.  The Con is an amazing gathering of Japanese anime and manga fans, many of them in costume, at the Washington Visitor and Trade Center.  Here is their website:

http://www.sakuracon.org/

You do not need a pass to reach the room where we teach.  But our best volunteers do get passes for the rest of the convention.  We usually play teaching games on the 9x9 and 13x13, since many of the visitors to our room already know some Go.

If you can volunteer at least 4 hours, and would like a pass to the full Sakura Con, please contact me at manager@seattlego.org, or in person at the Go Center.   Since this is a very popular privilege, priority will be given to volunteers who are all already teaching at the Go Center, or who can commit to helping at one of our other outreach events, such as the Cherry Blossom Festival the weekend of April 20-22, and the UDistrict Street Festival, May 19-20.  All folks who contact me before March 5 will be given equal consideration for passes.  (It will not be first come first served; if we get a lot of requests, we will use a lottery for all qualified volunteers to assign passes.  Last year we had enough.)

Please tell me when you think you will be coming.  I am particularly interested in getting commitments from volunteers for Sunday, and Friday daytime.  (You can adjust your schedule later, if things change.)  Once again, you do not need the pass to reach our room, if you just want to volunteer, or to watch the costumed crowds on the escalator.

Our hours will be as follows:

Friday, March 30, 10 AM to 10 PM (or later, if we have the volunteers)

Saturday, March 31, 10 AM to 10 PM (or later, if we have the volunteers)

Sunday, April 1, 10 AM to 4 PM (Moving stuff to Go Center 4-6 PM)

Please note that this weekend also has the Easter holiday, so watch out for schedule conflicts.

[Seattle Go Center] More on Marble Creek Campout Aug 23 - 26

Update:   We have sites 6 & 9 at the Marble Creek Campground reserved for the weekend.  There are 6 other sites available.  If you have a National Parks Senior Pass, you can get a 50% discount on the campground fees, but not the service charge.

Dear Go Players,

For a second year, Go players will be car camping in a beautiful rustic Forest Service campground in the North Cascades, along the Cascade River.  Deborah and I have reserved two camp spots from Thursday, Aug 23 to Sunday, Aug 26.   The campsites can be reserved 6 months ahead, starting at 7 a.m. Pacific time, so this weekend has just become available.  We encourage other Go players to make reservations soon.  (We will try for Sunday night, Aug 26 as well, but that night is not available until Monday Feb. 26 at 7:00 a.m.) The sites cost $14 a night, plus a $10 fee for each reservation.

https://www.recreation.gov/camping/map_of_Marble_Creek_Campground/r/campgroundMap.do?page=map&search=site&contractCode=NRSO&parkId=73773

The campground is the Marble Creek Campground, which is about a half hour from Marblemount, WA on Rt. 20.  Marblemount has some groceries and a couple of restaurants, and espresso.  The campsite is about 2.5 hours from Seattle.  The campground does not have potable water, and it only has pit toilets.  The area has lots of excellent hiking, some of it quite rugged.  Last year we had three couples camping (one with a small RV, one with a big tent, and one with a mountain tent).  We ate a lot of pie, and played some Go.  Let's do it again!  Campsite reservations go fast, so make your plans now!  If you have extra space at your campsite, I'm sure we can find more Go players later on.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] SDK Wednesday 2/21

Hi all!

I have a high homework load this week, so I don't have anything planned for class this week, but I will be there regardless! With the weather being what it is I am expecting a small crowd, so there should be opportunities for personal instruction and casual games. Also not that due to scheduling constraints, I will be there at 7pm this week rather than the regular 6:30. Regardless, I hope to see you all there!

[Seattle Go Center] Japan Night at John Stanford School March 9

Dear Go Teachers,

We have been invited to participate in “Japan Night” at John Stanford International School on Friday evening, March 9, running from 6 – 8 p.m. or later.  As usual, we will be teaching capture Go to beginners, and playing friendly 13x13 games with students who already know how to play.  There is free Japanese style curry for volunteers.  In the past, we have had a Go club at John Stanford, so it is good to keep in touch with this local public school.  Please let me know if you can help out.  We need two or three volunteers, including one to come at 5:30 p.m.

[Seattle Go Center] Warm and lively

Dear Go Players,

Don’t worry, we’ll have the heat turned up this Tuesday, so once you make it to the Go Center you will be warm.  Chris will be baking fresh bread, and we place an order for pizza at 6:30 pm.  The Tuesday crowd has been a  smaller than usual this month, especially in the afternoon, but last Tuesday, we had players from beginner to 7 dan, and everybody could find a game.  Remember, a slow Tuesday at the Seattle Go Center is still bigger than any other weekly Go group in North America.  We are open from 1 – 10 p.m.

Cheers,

[Seattle Go Center] Rengo Tournament June 9

Happy Valentine’s Day Go Players!

Let us remind you that a Rengo Tournament has been scheduled for Saturday evening June 9.  This is Pair Go without the boy/girl rules.  The other Pair Go traditions will continue: good food, lots of fun, a good excuse to teach somebody Go.  Now would be a good time to find somebody for the Rengo tournament, and if they don’t know the game of Go already, to start teaching them.

Cheers,

Brian

Hi all!

My apologies for the late notice, as I forgot to send out an email earlier in the week; we will be having our regularly scheduled class tonight, though, starting at 6:30 as per usual. I have a bit of lecture material if enough folks show up, and there will of course be plenty of time for casual and teaching games. I hope to see you all there!

Re: [ORE] Adding extras to Body Stat

It has been a long time since I looked at the rules, but to my knowledge extras are added as a per die cost.

Human version (Originally built with 100 points for their origin adventure)
Body 2
Brawling 2

So i know that extras can be added to the body stat but i can't find in the Essential edition exactly how the costs work.  Dose the cost of the extra apply to each die of the stat like a normal power and then effect every action they use the Body dice for?

So here is what i'm thinking of doing to the above character and how I think it would work/cost.

+2 Body Hyperstats (8 pts)
+4 Brawling Hyperskills (4 pts)

Now charater has
4d Body
4d Brawling

Extras: Total cost +6
Deadly (+2) Brawling and melee weapons(?) now do width in S/K.
Power Capacity: Mass (+2) For some knock back  (Or do i need attack power quality first?)
2 x Booster (+1)

So I think it would be 6(for the extras times 4 for the current Body (6x4= 24)

That 24 plus hyperstat cost of 8 and hyperskill cost of 4 (24+8+4= 36)

So for a total of 36 points (on top of his original build) the character has this attack?
Body + Brawling  (10d)
Deadly - Dose width in S/K
Mass (5,000 Lbs)
Lift (40,000 Lbs)
Throw 10 yards (5,000 Lbs)
Sprint 60 yards (about 60 MPH)
Jump 20/4 yards

[Seattle Go Center] Volunteers sought for new school Go club near Issaquah

Dear Go Players,

We finally have a Go club organized for a school on the Eastside, at Challenger Elementary in Sammamish.   As of last week, they had 11 students.  The Challenger Go Club is restricted to students from that school, but I hope this will inspire other Eastside schools to give a Go club a try.  And if you know a student at Challenger Elementary, please encourage them to join the club!

The club will be taught by Bill Mokin, who teaches at Challenger.   I will be helping out as well.  We welcome other players (18 and over) who want to help teach.  The Club will meet on Wednesdays, starting soon after school.  Wednesdays have early dismissal, so this would be from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m.  The school is located at 25200 SE Klahanie Blvd, Sammamish, WA 98029.   The meeting dates are:

2/28/18

3/7/18

3/14/18

3/21/18

3/28/18

Spring break

4/18/18

4/25/18

5/2/18

Please contact me if you are interested in helping out.

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: Pros Are Stupid

Hey Go Fans-

OK, so professional Go players aren't really stupid...but occasionally they have done some stupid things. We will look at two professional games in which the players seriously botched an early game sequence and were forced into a fast resignation. Assuming that you have made mistakes in your own games, I think we will all enjoy relating to these poor professionals.

I hope to see you there!

[Seattle Go Center] Monthly Ratings Tournament this Sunday Feb 4

Dear Go Players,

Well, it's February already, and the Monthly Ratings Tournament is coming up this Sunday, Feb. 4, with registration from
10 to 10:45. We had 40 people at the Jin Chen Tournament last month, which had prizes. The December ratings
tournament had 22 players, from 5 dan to 25 kyu. In December, two thirds of the games had handicaps of two stones or
less.

Here are the details for this Sunday:

This is a great way to play some intense Go face to face. 3 rounds, Japanese rules. The tournament is free, but you need
to pay for your visit to the Go Center, or be a voting member of the Go Center, or be under the age of 18, or be a "new
member" which gives you ten free visits.

Registration is from 10:00 - 10:45 sharp. You can call 206 545-1424 if you will run late. If you call in, your clock starts
10 min into the first round, and after 30 min, if you do not show, you forfeit. If you come before 12:30 and register, you
will probably be able to play in the second round.

First round starts at 11 am. Second round starts by 1:30, but may start sooner. If your first game runs long, you do not
have much time for lunch. We recommend that you bring food to the Go Center, rather than planning on going out to
get lunch.

AGA membership is required; please check to see if your membership is current, and try to renew it online if it needs to
be updated. More info on membership is at www.usgo.org. You can join the AGA or renew in person at the Go Center
as well, but please come early to do that.

You do not have play all three rounds - just be sure to tell the Tournament Director what your plans are.

Cheers,
Brian
