[Seattle Go Center] Mr. Ono Feb.29-Mar.3; Mr. Komatsu Mar.9-Mar.13; upcoming tournaments etc.

Hello fellow Go enthusiasts,

Today, reminders of upcoming events:

Upcoming visitors from Japan

Feb. 29 - Mar. 3:  Ono Shingo, Japanese strong amateur
A friend of Chris Scribner's, 小野慎吾 (Ono Shingo), will visit Seattle this weekend.  He's ranked as a Japanese amateur 7 dan, though in tournaments he plays at a 12d rating.  He's not an accredited pro, but his strength is close to pro 1 dan, and he is a director and instructor at Ishin Project.

While he's here, Mr. Ono has generously offered to play simuls, with up to 4 players at a time (one session Saturday Feb. 29 at 1:30pm, and another two sessions Tuesday March 3 at 2:30pm and 6:30pm).  He also will be competing in the monthly AGA ratings tournament on March 1 -- an outstanding opportunity for a challenging game!  Further, he's interested in getting together with other strong players.  If you're interested, please email programs@SeattleGo.org and I'll pass it along to Chris and Mr. Ono.

Mr. Daiki Komatsu, 3P, Mar. 9 - Mar. 13
Japanese 3 Dan pro Mr. Daiki Komatsu will visit Seattle Go Center the second week of March.  The Go Center is very lucky to have this awesome support from the Nihon Ki-in!  Here's what's scheduled; may be subject to change.
  • Mon. March 9 - 6:30pm - Double Digit Kyu lecture!
  • Tue. March 10 - 2:30pm - Simuls!  & 6:30pm - More simuls!
  • Wed. March 11 - 6:00pm - Single Digit Kyu lecture!

Upcoming tournaments

These are a *great* way to experience the thrill of serious competition.  We're lucky at the Go Center to often have a large enough field that players of just about any level can get in a tournament game.  Each tournament is 3 rounds.  Register at the tournament, 10:00-10:45am.  Current AGA membership is required.

  • Sunday, March 1 - free AGA ratings tournament
  • Sunday, April 5 - free AGA ratings tournament
  • Sunday, May 3 - Annual Spring Go tournament; $12 to enter ($6 for youth 17 and younger), includes pizza lunch and prizes for players who win all three of their games
  • Sunday, May 31 - Spring Youth fun tournament, 1pm-5pm.  Free for youth under 18; not AGA-rated.  Kids choose whether to compete on 13x13 or 19x19.  Prizes for all!
  • Sunday, June 7 - free AGA ratings tournament

Rengo with Pie and Coffee!
Saturday, June 13 -- The annual Rengo with Pie and Coffee is *so* much fun.  Rengo is when teams of two players face off against other two-player teams.  We'll be using the International Pair Go rules, but without regard for the genders of team members (all are welcome).  If you don't have a partner, come anyway -- forming more teams at the start of the tournament.  $12 registration ($6 for under 18) includes two rounds of Rengo, fancy pie, and a chance to win *fabulous* prizes.  Register 5:30-6:00pm, and the first round starts shortly after 6.  We usually finish about 10pm.

Outreach and Tournament Party
The Go Center also needs more outreach volunteers (it's fun and easy, and gets you into cool events like Sakura-Con -- see tomorrow's email), and help planning the 25th Anniversary Party (October).  So far, only one has volunteered (thank you, Lusha!).  Many hands make light work.  And light play is good play.  So, help plan the anniversary party, and get better at Go!  (Your mileage may vary, but your Go community will appreciate your efforts.)

Thanks for reading!  See you soon at the Go Center,

Mike Malveaux
