[Seattle Go Center] "BadatBaduk" visiting Go Center Today, Tuesday

Dear Go Players,

The AGA Youtube host “BadatBaduk” will be visiting the Go Center today, Tuesday, Feb. 28.  He is about 4 dan, and he says he wants to play all the Go players in Seattle.  I’m not sure when he will arrive.  We will be open from 1-10 p.m., maybe later, if “babs” is still playing.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Monday DDK Class: Mi Yuting

Greetings Go Fans-

It's been a while since we've looked at a full pro-game, and I'd really like to get back into those. I've decided that we really need to do a class on Mi Yuting, who is rated as the #3 player in the world right now. Those of you who have been closely following Alpha Go news will also note that he's one of the players who was the closest to beating the latest version of Alpha Go (and in other pro analysis, many believe he would have won if he didn't make a small endgame mistake that allowed Alpha Go to win by 0.5 pts). Mi Yuting was the youngest title holder ever in China (his first one came at age 13) and since he is only 21 years old, I think we can all expect some great things from him to come.

I hope that you will all want to come and experience these Go phenoms amazing play!

[Seattle Go Center] Sakura Con Volunteers Needed April 14-16

Dear Members,

Once again, we will be teaching and sharing the game of Go at the Sakura-Con, which is happening this year on Friday, April 14 through Sunday, April 16.  The Con is an amazing gathering of Japanese anime and manga fans, many of them in costume, at the Washington Visitor and Trade Center.  Here is their website:

http://www.sakuracon.org/

You do not need a pass to reach the room where we teach.  But our best volunteers do get passes for the rest of the convention.  We usually play teaching games on the 9x9 and 13x13, since many of the visitors to our room already know some Go.

If you can volunteer at least 4 hours, and would like a pass to the full Sakura Con, please contact me at manager@seattlego.org, or in person at the Go Center.   Since this is a very popular privilege, priority will be given to volunteers who are all already teaching at the Go Center, or who can commit to helping at one of our other outreach events, such as the Cherry Blossom Festival the next weekend, April 21-23, and the UDistrict Street Festival, May 20-21.  All folks who contact me before March 1 will be given equal consideration for passes.  (It will not be first come first served; if we get a lot of requests, we will use a lottery for all qualified volunteers to assign passes.)

Please tell me when you think you will be coming.  (You can adjust your schedule later, if things change.)  Once again, you do not need the pass to reach our room, if you just want to volunteer, or to watch the costumed crowds on the escalator.

Our hours will be as follows:

Friday, April 14, 10 AM to 10 PM (or later, if we have the volunteers)

Saturday, April 15, 10 AM to 10 PM (or later, if we have the volunteers)

Sunday, April 16, 10 AM to 4 PM (Moving stuff to Go Center 4-6 PM)

Please note that this weekend also has the Easter holiday, so watch out for schedule conflicts.

[Seattle Go Center] Last day for survey about pro visit.

Dear Members,

Today  Wednesday is the last day to respond to our four question survey about an upcoming pro visit.  The Nihon Ki-in in Japan will probably be sending a young pro, Bian Wenkai 2P, to Seattle from March 23 to March 29, 2017.   Mr. Bian is fluent in Chinese and Japanese, and he speaks some English.  We will have translators available.

To help us plan his visit, please fill out this four question multiple choice survey, if you haven’t already.   It will help us a lot.

[Seattle Go Center] You'll find a game on Tuesdays

Dear Go Players,

The largest weekly gathering of Go players in North America continues on Tuesdays, from 1-10 pm at the Seattle Go Center.  Judging from the last few weeks, I expect about 30 players, which is a slow night by our standards, but still the envy of other American Go clubs.  And we often have surprise guests.  In January, a 9 dan pro (our friend Myung Wan Kim) dropped by unannounced.  It would be good to see you too.

Cheers,

Brian

Dear Members,

I’m passing this on to our  email list.  I haven’t checked out Todd’s books – contact him directly if you are interested.  By the way, we have had several nice donations of books recently, but those books will be put in our library, and used for prizes.  We will not be selling them.

"Local player is selling books to pay for utilities. Mostly sdk-range with a few ddk and a few dan, English and largely Kiseido. If interested, contact todd.rainey@gmail.com".

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: Sibicky Makes Sabaki

Hi Everyone -

So far our class this year has been periodically interrupted by holidays, weather, and illness, but I'm happy to say that I'll be teaching a workshop tonight on making sabaki. For those of you who don't know, sabaki is the art of making flexible shapes for your stones when they deep in your opponent's sphere of influence. These shapes often involve a lot of sacrifice stones, and can be made so that they are difficult to attack. A player who is well-versed in the art of sabaki will cause much frustration for their opponents. I hope to see you there!

The days are getting longer, and the weather more gentle, so it is time to get out and play more Go face to face.  The Hurry Curry meetup needs a few more players, at any level, so come on by, and get dinner at happy hour prices, and also have a game of Go, or some informal instruction.

They will meet next on

[Seattle Go Center] Saturdays at the Go Center

Its been kinda slow at the Go Center on Saturdays this winter. Hours are from 1pm to 7pm and players of all levels are welcome. And if you're new to the game, teaching games can be arranged.

My hours as the Saturday day manager start at 12:30pm, as there are a few administrative tasks I need to do to prepare for all you Go players. And I'm usually there much earlier (usually by noon), so I can have time to eat my lunch beforehand.

So, as long as the doors are open, you are welcome to come in and not have to wait until 1pm. You can study in the library, or play a game with anyone else who comes in early.

If you come, others will come.

[ORE] House Guideline: Booster and Attacks

I'll find, left to their own devices, players will load up on a bunch of Booster for a power like telekinesis. Because it feels awesome to be able to lift an aircraft carrier, don't it?

And then they'll go to smash someone with their often telekenitic might and......be totally underwhelmed when they do as much damage as some dude with a pistol. "It makes no sense!", they'll say, "That I can lift a million tons but I can't squish a normal human without getting lucky on my roll!"

So I usually advice people - for every level of Booster you take for the Useful quality of a power, if it also has an Attacks quality, throw on a level of Attacks as well. Same for stuff like Hyperbody and Booster, too.

Makes things feel a lot less wonky.

[Seattle Go Center] Contemporary Go Terms Discussion Tonight - Free at 7:00.

Dear Members,

Here’s a friendly reminder that visiting pro Chihyung Nam will lead a discussion tonight, Wednesday, on her book “Contemporary Go Terms”,  a comparison of Go terms in English, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean.  The book was published by Oromedia, but unfortunately it is out of print.  We will have some handouts from the book for participants.  We will have several bilingual and trilingual members attending, so it should be a good discussion.  The event is free.

Re: [ORE] How would you do a body-swapping power?

Body Swap 4/d
Useful: range, Endless, non-physical (resist with Stability), exhausted, unique flaw-1

For the duration your mind occupies another's body and their mind resides in yours. This gives control of any powers and skills to you while giving control of your powers and skills to them.

If you end the power's duration while outside its range your consciousness dissolves before returning to your body and you die.

I don't like overthinking things.

[Seattle Go Center] Snow Cancellation for DDK

Dear Go Players,

There will be no Double Digit Kyu Players class tonight, Monday, Feb. 6, due to weather concerns.  We expect to be open Tuesday 1-10 pm, which includes simultaneous games with visiting pro Chihyung Nam at 6:30 p.m.  And on Wednesday, at 7:00 p.m., Ms. Nam will lead a discussion on issues raised by her book “Contemporary Go Terms”, which compares Go terms across 4 languages.  One topic: Is there an exact equivalent Go term for “liberties” in Japanese?
