Dear Go Players,
Our room at Sakura Con is #305 of the WA State Convention Center, on the third floor near the escalator. You do not need a pass to reach us. We welcome more teachers for both beginners and kyu players, there have already been a few times when we could use another teacher. We will be open until 10 pm tonight, and Saturday night too. Come join the fun!
Parking is very expensive near the Convention Center, so consider other methods of getting there. We will reimburse carpools for three or more volunteers.
Our 13x13 tournament will start on Sunday around 10 am, and finish around noon. Everybody can play, and there is no fee, but only paying members of Sakura Con can get the beautiful glass trophy, based on Hiroshige’s “The Wave”. We close at 4 pm on Sunday. I will need help loading my car after that. Any volunteers?
Cheers,
Brian
Dear Go Players,
The Seattle Go Center will be open 4 – 9 pm today Thursday. Evening classes will run as usual. My thanks to Nick W for coming in early on short notice.
Cheers,
Brian
Hi All –
Nathan has a cold, and doesn’t want to spread it around. Can somebody else open the Go Center today, Thursday, March 29, at 2:00 p.m.? (I will be teaching the Go Club at McDonald School.)
Otherwise, we will open at 6:00 p.m., or so.
Regards,
Brian

Dear Go Players,
There is so much going on this coming weekend that we have put off the Ratings Tournament until Sunday, April 8, with
registration from 10 to 10:45.
This weekend, March 30 - April 1, we will be at the big anime and manga festival, Sakura Con at the Washington State
Convention Center. You are welcome to play in the 13x13 tournament there on Sunday morning, which will start at 10
or maybe a bit later. However, you have to be a paying member of Sakura Con in order to win the prizes, including the
cool trophy.
You will not need a Sakura Con pass to reach us at room 305 during the weekend. We are close to the escalator on the
third floor of the Convention Center. We will be open 10 am to 10 pm on Friday, 10 am to 10 pm on Saturday, and 10
am to 4 pm on Sunday.
Cheers,
Brian

Dear Members,
Nick Sibicky will be back to teach April 2, but this Monday, March 26, I’ll give a short talk on Go equipment to the DDK class (and anybody else who is interested). There will be time for a game after the talk.
I’ll give a tour of our floor boards and table boards, and the boards in our equipment shop, and talk about what kind of wood they are made of. Some of the boards have interesting histories, so we will explore that too. I’ll talk about what we learned from our board refinishing and re-lining project. We will also look at different kinds of stones, including some really nice slate and shell stones. Finally, we will talk about where you can find equipment to buy, online and in person.
Cheers,

Dear Members,
Our next pro lecture by Chang Ruei Jie (Ray Chang) will continue with the AlphaGo games. On Wednesday, March 21, starting at 6:30 p.m., he will consider two of the Zero vs. Master Games. They are #4 and #19. I’ve attached the sgf files for those games to this message. The lecture is free.
Ray is also playing simultaneous games tomorrow, Tuesday, March 20, starting at 6:30. Four places are still available. ($10) Email me if you are interested.
We would like to thank the Nihon Ki-in for making Ray’s visit possible.
Cheers,
Brian

Dear Go Players,
Daniel Top will not be at Hurry Curry in the South Lake Union area tonight, since he is feeling not well. Contact me if you want to know how to get the Go equipment. Dan expects to be back next week, 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.
Cheers,

Dear Members,
Our Youth Tournament (under 18) is coming up on Sunday, March 25, from 1:00 p.m. to 5 p.m. This is a friendly tournament for children at all levels of play. Prizes will include, books, equipment, and fun things. There is no fee, and you do not have register in advance. The tournament will not be rated, so the players do not need to be American Go Association Members. Children choose whether they want to play on 13x13 or 19x19 boards. The 13x13 games may finish earlier than 5 p.m. We will have pizza around 3 pm.
From what I have heard, I think the 13x13 section will be bigger than the 19x19. I have 3 or 4 students coming from the McDonald International School Club, and they will all be playing on the smaller boards.
Cheers,
Brian
Dear DDK Go Students,
Nick Sibicky will be on Spring Break the next two weeks. For this week, we have brought in a 2 dan professional from the Nihon Ki-in to substitute. Chang Ruei Jie, who is going by Ray Chang in the U.S., will give a lecture on AlphaGo from the perspective of young pro in Japan. This will include a review of one or more games. Ray will be giving the lecture mostly in English, but we have Frank Fukuda ready to translate more the complicated phrases. Ray moved from Taiwan to Japan to study Go when he was 11 years old. He lived with his Sensei, Takabayashi Takuji 6d, along with 5 other students. He became a pro at age 14, and 2 dan at age 16. He recently turned 19. He speaks both Japanese and Mandarin, and is currently studying English.
The lecture is free for everybody, and it will start at 6:30 p.m.
Cheers,
Brian Allen
Dear Go Players,
Our visiting pro from the Nihon Ki-in, Chang Ruei Jie, suggests that we call him Ray. He wants to practice his English,
so he will be teaching at least part of the time English. But he also speaks Mandarin and Japanese, so we will have
translators available if he needs help with difficult terms. This is his first visit to America. He likes U.S. sports, and he
follows both professional baseball and the NBA.
There is still room in the One Day Workshop on Sunday, March 18. There will be plenty of opportunity to have games
reviewed and ask individual questions. His Monday night lecture will be on AlphaGo, and include analysis of an AlphaGo
game. That starts at 6:30 p.m., and it is free. Tuesday will have simultaneous games, starting at 6:30. There are still 5
places available ($10). Wednesday will probably have another game review. It will start at 6:30, and be free.
More info on the workshop is here:

Dear Go Players,
The Nihon Ki-in Pro, Chang Ruei Jie, will be arriving in Seattle tomorrow, Friday.
He is young – only 19. He became pro at 17, and now he is a 2 dan. As you might expect for a young pro, he is very interested in AlphaGo. We look forward to hearing his reaction to the AlphaGo games.
On Saturday, March 17, he will be visiting the Go class at the Northwest Chinese School, and then coming to the Go Center to play simultaneous games, starting at 4:00. Last I checked, there were still three places available. ($10) Please email me if you are interested in playing. Everybody is welcome to watch.
On Sunday, March 18, we have a one day workshop with Mr. Chang. We will know more about what he is planning after he gets to Seattle tomorrow. But I am sure participants will have a chance to get personal advice and instruction during the workshop. The workshop could be fairly small, but it is definitely running. If you are coming to the workshop, bring some records of your games, if you have them. For more information on the workshop, and to register, use this link: http://www.seattlego.org/one-day-pro-workshop/
We will have free classes on Monday evening and Wednesday evening, and more simultaneous games on Tuesday. Our events page has the details. http://www.seattlego.org/events/

Dear Members,
Go Players lead complicated lives, and so it turns out that we do not have a leader for the SDK class this Wednesday, March
14. However, next week, we have our visiting pro from the Nihon Ki-in, Chang Ruei Jie, giving a lecture at 6:30 pm, with
Lucy Lu Wang as host. The event is free.
Cheers,
Brian

Dear Members,
We are doing outreach at "Pi Night" on March 14 (3.14) at the Salmon Bay Elementary School in Ballard. This involves
teaching capture Go and eating pie from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. It's a tough job, but let me know if you want to help out. I will
be there as well. My apologies for the short notice on this.
The even is in the cafeteria of the Salmon Bay School, 1810 NW 65th St, Seattle, WA 98117
Cheers,
Brian

Dear Go Players,
The $10 early registration discount ends soon for the One Day Workshop with Chang Ruei Jie 2P on Sunday, March 18. You need to sign up by Saturday, March 10 to get the discount.
The workshop is a deal even after the discount is passed, but if you know your schedule, why not save $10? This is a great opportunity to get instruction from a young pro. For more information, please visit our webpage at: http://www.seattlego.org/one-day-pro-workshop/

Dear Members,
It’s getting to be “outreach season” at the Go Center, with Sakura Con, Cherry Blossom and U-District Street Fair coming up. Do any of the groups that we support have Go boards that they are not using? (Meet-ups and school Go clubs.) In particular, I am looking for more of the thin 13x13/9x9 boards, and of the thin yellow 19x19 boards. If you could drop them off at the Go Center, that would be great.
Cheers,
Brian

Dear Go Players,
The March Ratings Tournament is coming up this Sunday, March 4, with registration from
10 to 10:45. The February ratings tournament had 16 players, from 1 dan to 15 kyu. Four of them were youth.
Here are the details for this Sunday:
This is a great way to play some intense Go face to face. 3 rounds, Japanese rules. The tournament is free, but you need
to pay for your visit to the Go Center, or be a voting member of the Go Center, or be under the age of 18, or be a "new
member" which gives you ten free visits.
Registration is from 10:00 - 10:45 sharp. You can call 206 545-1424 if you will run late. If you call in, your clock starts
10 min into the first round, and after 30 min, if you do not show, you forfeit. If you come before 12:30 and register, you
will probably be able to play in the second round.
First round starts at 11 am. Second round starts by 1:30, but may start sooner. If your first game runs long, you do not
have much time for lunch. We recommend that you bring food to the Go Center, rather than planning on going out to
get lunch.
AGA membership is required; please check to see if your membership is current, and try to renew it online if it needs to
be updated. More info on membership is at www.usgo.org. You can join the AGA or renew in person at the Go Center
as well, but please come early to do that.
You do not have play all three rounds - just be sure to tell the Tournament Director what your plans are.
Cheers,
Brian
