Tiffany will translate a Go program that was originally broadcast on Chinese TV.  Tonight’s class will be partially run as a Q&A session, and the person who correctly predicts the most moves made by the pros will win a Haagen Daz ice cream gift card.   Tiffany Yang is a UW student who learned Go in Hong Kong.  We look forward to her first presentation at the Go Center.

[Seattle Go Center] DDK class meets night: study group

Dear Go Players,

Nick Sibicky will return to teach the DDK class in September.  Tonight, Monday, Aug 19, I will review two very close games I had at the Go Congress (one win, one loss) to look for extra points.  As I am only 9 kyu, this will be a study group, not a lecture.  Class begins at 6:30, and you will have time for a game afterwards.

Next week, Tiffany Yang, a UW student, will translate Chinese TV shows on Wei ch’i (Go).  Tiffany recently moved to the Seattle area, and is a dan level player.  We are happy to have her volunteer to teach at the Go Center.

Cheers,

Brian

Re: [Seattle Go Center] Open today, Saturday Aug. 17

We had a really good day today. 10 people, and all at the same time for several hours, from total beginners to professional.

I know that doesn't sound like a lot, but Saturday's have been kind of slow (and folks don't always come at the same time). Maybe its picking up. Come on down and we'll try to get you a game. Or just enjoy the atmosphere watching others play, or pick a book from the library and do a little self-study.

[Seattle Go Center] Simuls today Thursday at 2:00 Lecture at 7:00

Dear Go Players,

Today, Thursday, August 15, we have two pro events.  Miss Chihiro Chujo 1P will be playing simultaneous games at the Go Center at 2:00 p.m.   As of 9:00 a.m., there was still room on the sign-up list.  You may e-mail me to get on the list.  Donation to play a game with Miss Chujo is $10.  (No charge to watch.)

At 7:00 p.m., the famous and friendly Masaki Takemiya 9p will give a lecture that is recommended for everybody, but will be directed to kyu players.  Even if you are just starting out, you should benefit from this lecture, because he often talks about the overall shape of the stones, rather than the technical details of the fights.  At the same time, he is a 9 dan pro, so you can be sure he has read out the details as well!  The general admission fee is $15; $10 for students and voting members.

Our guests will be returning to Japan soon; these are the last events we have scheduled with them.  We hope you can attend.

Cheers,

Brian

Re: [ORE] Re: Gambit-like Power Construction in Wild Talents ed2

Thanks for the ideas; here's what I came up with...

Useful (Touch) - Duration, Non-Physical, Touch Only
Attacks (Touch) - Touch Only, Disintegrate, Non-Physical, Duration, Engulf
Attacks (Range) - Area (3), Penetration (2), Extra Attack Levels (+3), If/Then (Must have something to charge then throw)

The touch attack would allow the character to "charge" another person... which would theoretically cause damage even without exploding.

Total cost I came up with is 21/die, and a 2HD makes this pretty powerful thanks to Penetration + Extra Attack Levels.

i'm still relatively new to all this, but does this seem to fit ?

I feel like the Mass +2 capacity should be added too, if not for affecting the object your picking up, then just for the awesomeness of knock-back by a hurled exploding playing frisbee.

If the delay is important to your story or character concept then add the flaw: Slow -2 and adjust above scores accordingly.

You could also add extra Attack levels +1/per or Penetration +1/per and so on...

Just make sure to keep Athletics or whatever you choose to attach it to at least as high ranking as the miracle because you roll the lower of the 2 pools.

You could also add extra Attack levels +1/per or Penetration +1/per and so on...

Just make sure to keep Athletics or whatever you choose to attach it to at least as high ranking as the miracle because you roll the lower of the 2 pools.

[ORE] Re: Gambit-like Power Construction in Wild Talents ed2

I was thinking of just building off the "Vicious" miracle. Cost: 5/die, or 7/die with mass added on.
Attacks +1: Augment +4, Area +1, If/Then (must announce in the declare phase) -1, If/Then (inorganic matter only), Attached -2 (attached to throwing an object or athletics skill, whatever you want to say)
I feel like the Mass +2 capacity should be added too, if not for affecting the object your picking up, then just for the awesomeness of knock-back by a hurled exploding playing frisbee.

[Seattle Go Center] Bring your game records!

Dear Go Players,

When you come to our pro events this week, don’t forget your game records (kifu).  There will be opportunities for game reviews by the pros, both formal and informal.  It is good to replay your games a few times in advance of the game review, so that you can show the game quickly.

As usual, the schedule is here:

Re: [ORE] Making a Gambit-like Power

Just replied to the earlier, but one more thing:

It's not a particularly useful power, he pretty much only uses it to attack or break things, so let that guide your build process.

Re: [ORE] Gambit-like Power Construction in Wild Talents ed2

I would probably go with attacks and add an if/then "appropriate inorganic material components" and skill operated flaws and a delayed, explosive, and spray extras. I wouldn't make it two actions.

Reasoning: any math to determine explosive effect breaks down when a card can take off the head of a sentinel but a motorcycle can only blow up a convenience store, how destructive his power is has been too much "narrative necessity" over the years. If you want to add a Useful "matter destruction" for how the objects become unstable and are destroyed make it a permanent/ attached to attacks effect with the mass capacity, add "inorganic only" as a flaw.

As far as extras on the attacks quality, by saying "appropriate materials" you cover whether he's throwing a handful of marbles (spray) or a single pen, and whether he's juicing a big object for structure damage (delayed and explosive).

[ORE] Making a Gambit-like Power

Apologies if this a duplicate, I thought I had posted this last nite...

How would a Gambit-like power be constructed? That is, the ability to temporarily "charge" something so that it will explode with a slight impact (when thrown, etc.)

Is this only a useful power, since it can't directly be used to attack?

[Seattle Go Center] DDK class Monday Night: free pro lecture!

Dear Go Players,

Japanese Pro Chihiro Chujo from the Kansai Ki-in will give a lecture on Monday night for kyu players.  She is a friendly and enthusiastic teacher. This is now scheduled for 7:00 p.m. (changed from 6:30)  This is free because we want to encourage our beginners.

We have 5 other pro events scheduled this week, including three with the incredible Takeyima Masaki,  Check out our calendar for the details.

The pros may be at the Go Center at other times as well this week.  (Times when we are normally not open.)  So if you are in the neighborhood, and the door is unlocked, come on up to see if anything is happening.

Cheers,

Of course even on a salt flat TK could whip them abruptly into the air and slam them down to the ground. Even just 6-9 ft. of loft would be enough to do some damage.

[ORE] Re: Some Conversion Help for Powers

Gravity Dude.

In play, Gravity Dude has made multiple, simultaneous zones of varying gravity. He can fly, bind, harm, defend, lighten, carry.

Frankly... I  am at a loss to accurately build this without overspending by a lot.

In combat, he USUALLY uses an attack I can easily build with Bind. Gravity holds his victims fast. Sometimes it pulls them up against a wall or something, and THEN holds them fast. But he's also capable of some pretty nasty damage. I've declared that a sudden field of 10g on an unprepared target will probably kill a person, just from the falling over.

Cosmic Power with "Gravity Effects Only" If/Then?

[ORE] Some Conversion Help for Powers

(Posted on RPG.Net, but then realized this is where the experts are!)

Hi all,

I'm converting characters from a rules-lite mishmash to Wild Talents.
I hope the more experienced and brilliant minds here can help. Is there any better, cooler, more interesting or efficient ways to do these powers?

First up, "Corona," basically modeled on Johny Storm, power-wise. She's a sexy and successful singer who incorporates displays of fire into her performance. She has mundane stats and skills for the most part (Though "Performance: Fire" is one of her skills to make artistic use of the flame), and I budgeted 250 points for the powers portion:

Immunity to Fire, Useful, 2HD, 12 points. She is immune to ordinary fire. In a fight she'll rely on her defenses.

"Flame On!" - Kat surrounds herself with a fiery aura which protects her and hurt anyone who gets too close.
Heavy Armor, with Duration instead of Endless, adding Burns and Obvious because it's a flaming aura of energy. 6 per die
-- Flame On! 4HD (48 points)
(Possible tweaks: She'd like to carry another person while flying, and have the aura protect them. If we can shave points elsewhere, she'd *like* to have the flame be optional at her discretion, which would remove the "Obvious" IMO even when she chooses to use it since she could then choose NOT to use the flame so making it Obvious is her choice)

Flight - Kat can fly while flamed on.
Flight, Attached (-2), Booster (Speed) X3 (+3) - 5 per die
-- Flight 8d (40 points)
(Possible Tweaks: Add Capacity, Mass to carry another person. Make the power stand alone instead of attached)

"Hurl Fire" - Kat can throw blasts of flame
Harm, Burns (+2), Power Capacity: Mass (+2) (for knockback), and High Capacity: Range (+1) - 7 per die
-- Hurl Fire 7d (49 points)
(The knockback is important to the player, but is there a better way to handle it?)

"Mastery of Fire" - Kat can Create and Control Flame.
I split the Attack Quality off into a separate power because she's especially skilled with playing with fire, and I didn't want to buy Wiggle Dice on the attack. It is NOT attached to Flame On! by Specific Player Request.
Mastery of Flame - Create Fire, removing Attacks, adding a second Useful for control - 8 per die total
-- Defends (Range), Range instead of Self so she can use it to defend others - 2 points (Should it be 4 points for Range PLUS Self?)
-- Create (Range), Useful, Burn, Controlled Effect, Fragile, Reduced Capacity (Range) - 3 points
-- Control (Range), Useful, Burn, Controlled Effect, Fragile, Reduced Capacity (Range) - 3 points
-- Mastery of Flame, 6d, 2wd (112 points)
(I don't like this. It's expensive and not very snazzy.)

Corona also eats like an anime character due to a crazy high metabolism, but we didn't think of making a thing out of it because it's mostly just fun to play and it's never affected a fight before.

Thoughts are Welcome. Next up, Gravity Dude.

[Seattle Go Center] Pro Lecture tonight Friday 7:00 p.m.

Dear Go Players,

Our good friend Ryo Maeda 6p from Japan will be giving a lecture tonight on game situations that look simple but actually are more complicated than they first appear.  He will be using examples suitable for players 10k to 5 dan, but all are welcome to attend.  General admission is $15; youth and voting members pay $10. We hope to see you tonight at 7:00 p.m!

The Go Center will be closed on Saturday, as we prepare for the US Go Congress in Tacoma, and also on Sunday and Monday.  We will be open our regular hours on Tuesday, 3-10 p.m.

Cheers,

Brian

Re: [ORE] Hurling people with the Useful aspect of Telekinesis?

I think you just figure out "falling damage", the inherent weakness is 2 chances for the target mitigate damage.

Chance 1: the body/athletics, command/stability, coordination/dodge roll to avoid/shrug off the grab.

Chance 2: the coordination/tumbling, body/endurance roll to avoid injury from the tk drop/toss.

There are other ways to explain why Tank McJuggler can juggle tanks but not injure.
Example: the power creates a TK bubble/platform that moves stuff but doesn't "crush" it just applies force until the target begins to move then plateaus, path of least resistance style. I might say that the default nature of superpowers leans toward the minimum energy required to produce the desired effect (I would avoid dictating the nature of a PCs psychology, but your game, your rules).

To explain the limited damage from attacks vs the massive force from tank lifting: the character might only have 2 "scales" with vehicle scale being heavy machinery level forces and human scale being surgical precision. Or going back to Mr Stolze's example if he thinks of TK as a giant hand he might only nab a "pinch" with a well evaded attack resulting in a "mere 2sk." (The same damage a small pistol would do...")

Re: [ORE] Hurling people with the Useful aspect of Telekinesis?

Picking someone up and dropping them is covered by Useful. They aren't hurt until they hit the ground. That sounds like a technicality, but there are ways to save them from that. Superman can sweep in and catch them. Spider-man can arrest his fall with his webs. Batman can use his cape. Non-super humans could have parachutes. If you want an analogy, even a four year old can kill an adult if they bump into the adult along the edge of a cliff.

The same thing with dropping big rocks or cars on people.

If you want a limitation, require it taking at least two rounds: one round to pick up the person/rock, the next round to drop the person/rock.

Slamming them into walls to do damage? I wouldn't allow that without taking the Attack quality. Have you seen movies like Poltergeist, where a supernatural entity throws people onto the walls, or up to the ceiling? They fly across the room and hit the wall, but at most the target is winded, and usually they seem to suffer no ill effects except maybe getting winded. In my mind that's what happens if you buy TK without Attack. The target is supernaturally whipped across the room, but something in the power stops short of hurting the target.

Why? Well, to me, there's something deep in the PC's psyche that just won't let them harm someone with that power, just like if a buddy tells you to hit him as hard as you can most people stop short of a full roundhouse punch. If you want your supernatural power to hurt someone, buy Attack. You're not just buying the ability to hurt, but the will to hurt.

Now, buying Attack means you can attack with TK even if you're in the middle of a salt flat. Somehow you're harming someone with TK with whatever is around, or even if there is nothing around. If a player wants to only hurt people if there's something they can slam the target against, then either assume that's part of the Attack power because you know you're never going to set your adventures on a salt flat (i.e. you'll pretty much always have a wall to slam someone against), or allow them to buy Attack with an If/Then [Slam Against Surface] flaw.

Can you hurt people by throwing them with the useful aspect of TK? I know in the description if says you can slam people for damage with the attacks aspect, but what about being dangerously useful...

Reason I'm asking is usually folks only take Booster on the Useful aspect of TK. It seems weird to have someone who can lift up a battleship, but then roll like 2 SK to the arm when it comes to attacking someone with that same TK. And what about things like lifting folks up and dropping them?

I'm just trying to think if I should just force folks who take big Boosters and such on their Useful part of TK to also take big damage for the attacks part...or if it is fair game to just be allowing them to do impact/knockback based stuff with Useful (ie: not doing a direct damage roll, but figure out the speed they're going and apply impact damage, etc...).

Thoughts?
