[Seattle Go Center] Next Ratings Tournament is on Sunday, April 12 at 10 AM

Dear Go Players,

In a change from our normal routine, the next Rating Tournament will be on the second Sunday of the month: April 12, stating at 10 am.  This is because we have lots going on with Sakura Con Outreach during the first weekend, Friday April 3 – Sunday April 5.   The first weekend is also Easter weekend for many, but Go Center will be open normal hours on Saturday, April 4, from 1-7 p.m.

At Sukura Con, we will be in the same room as last year, near the escalator: room 305.  You do not need a pass to reach us, so come help out! Here is our schedule:

Friday, April 3: 10 am to 10 pm

Saturday, April 4: 10 am to 10 pm

Sunday, April 5: 10 am to 4 pm (moving stuff to Go Center afterwards)

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Class Monday: Reading Practice

Hi Everyone-

Today's Double-Digit Kyu Class will feature a number of problems designed to test our reading abilities. These problems are designed such that you are encouraged to not place any physical stones on the board, but instead develop the capability to read it out in your mind. It will be taught in our normal "workshop" format.

Developing your reading skills is one of the key aspects to improving your game, no matter what your level. Please come and improve yours!

[ORE] Playtesting for Reign: The Ninth Legion

For a long while now Paul Mitchener (Blood of the Gods; Age of Arthur) has been working on a campaign setting book for Reign. It's for a new setting, with the descendants of a lost Roman legion living and struggling in cities they've built in a magical Celtic otherworld.

It's far enough along that we want to start playtesting. I expect we'll playtest it for a couple of months starting April 1st.

If you're interested (AND if you have a group of interested players -- please ask them first!), please email shane@arcdream.com. Please include "Ninth Legion playtesting" in the subject header for my reference. As usual we don't have any particularly onerous NDA requirements, only a "please don't talk about the details in public while they're still in development" honor system, which nobody has abused yet.

Thanks, all!

Re: [ORE] Digest for cult-of-ore@googlegroups.com - 1 update in 1 topic

ORE/Aberrant: Taint Rules

---Tainted: Flaw -1/-2/-3/-4, this flaw has no effect on the power itself other than to reduce the cost, however each Point saved on the power due to this flaw becomes Temporary Taint, you must always pay the discounted cost.
----Temporary Taint is a temporary Stat, like Willpower. It can be earned by saving points or botching rolls on Tainted powers. Every time you accrue 10 pts of temporary Taint you trade them in for 1 pt of Permanent Taint.
----1 point of Temp Taint can be bought off for 2 pts of Willpower during a "low power" period. The amount of Taint you can buy off is equal to the iterative sum of weeks, so 1 taint for 1 week, 3 taint for 2 weeks, 6 taint for 3 weeks etc.

For every point that a character's Permanent Taint exceeds their Base Will reduce the height of all non-powered Social Rolls against Baselines. This is the result of a subtle psychic pressure Taint exerts on the Baseline psyche, even mundane actions are perceived as devious, narcissistic (high Charm), megalomaniacal, threatening (high Command), etc. If/when this number is 10+ your character can no longer meaningfully interact with Baselines, your mere presence inspiring fear or madness.

Permanent Taint is assigned to Aberrations ala Base Will to Passions/Loyalties
-At least Half your character's permanent Taint must be assigned to 1 Aberration
-Aberrations rated 1-3 are Insignificant (Sensitivity to Cheese, the ability to distinguish between 2 specific shades of black, an oddly colored stomach lining, etc.). Many novas have a few of these without realizing it.
-Aberrations rated 4-5 are Minor (these include eyes/auras that glow in the dark without providing illumination, oddly colored skin etc).
-Aberrations rated 6-7 are Moderate (minor magnetism, a glow that illuminates a dim room, black thumb, etc).
-Aberrations rated 8-10 are Major (Permanent Forcefields that prevent physical contact, radioactivity, etc).
-Aberrations that have their ratings increased will mutate along a thematic line, an oddly colored stomach become oddly colored skin or peculiar visual senses becoming strange eyes (glowing, faceted etc).
-Aberrations function like dud powers but players can spend Experience over time to develop them into Taint Powers
--Taint Powers are not eligible for the Tainted Flaw

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Class Monday: The Avalanche!

Hey Everyone-
Tomorrow's Double-Digit Kyu Class will be an exploration of the Avalanche Joseki. We will start with the small avalanche, but hopefully will have time to introduce the large avalanche as well. The avalanche is one of the most feared joseki seen in actual play because it leads to some very complicated variations and usually immediate fighting. If you do not have confidence in playing the avalanche, this class is for you!! Do not miss it!

You can read an intro here: http://senseis.xmp.net/?AvalancheJoseki

Re: [ORE] Digest for cult-of-ore@googlegroups.com - 1 update in 1 topic

So you feel the rule set provides for enough of what you want…it's the content for setting and plot that you diverge from and gather from other sources?

I'm hankering to try and combine Night's Black Agents and Wild Talents…but that might be more than I can chew….

Our one hour annual meeting is coming up this Sunday, March 22 at 2 PM.  If you are a voting member of the Seattle Go Center, and you are not coming, please arrange for a voting member who is coming to vote your proxy.  (An agreement by email is sufficient.)  We need to meet the quorum requirements of our bylaws.

[Seattle Go Center] Corrected Spelling: Yoon Tae Ho Visit to Seattle 3-28 to 4-1

Dear Members,

The author of “Misaeng”, Yoon Tae Ho,  will be visiting Seattle from March 28 to April 1.  “Misaeng” is a popular manhwa (Korean graphic novel) about a talented and dedicated baduk (Go) player who does not achieve professional status, and who starts working for an international trading company.  It is now a very popular K-drama on cable TV.

Several of our members have been following it.  Brian Kirby observes, “The series is about go, but more about life in the office.  The go analogies used throughout are fun, nonetheless”.

Mr. Yoons’s visit has been organized by the University of Washington East Asia Library.  They are also presenting an exhibit of Korean Manhwa.  Here is the visit schedule:

You do not need a pass to reach the room where we teach.  But our best volunteers do get passes for the rest of the convention.  We usually play teaching games on the 9x9 and 13x13, since many of the visitors to our room already know some Go.

If you can volunteer at least 4 hours, and would like a pass to the full Sakura Con, please contact me at manager@seattlego.org.  Since this is a very popular privilege, priority will be given to volunteers who commit to helping at one of our other outreach events (such as the Cherry Blossom Festival, April 24-26, and the UDistrict Street Festival, May 16-17).  We need the names of volunteers who want passes by this Friday, March 20.  Please tell me when you think you will be coming.  (You can adjust your schedule later, if things change.)  Once again, you do not need the pass to reach our room, if you just want to volunteer, or to watch the costumed crowds on the escalator.

Our hours will be as follows:

Friday, March 29, 10 AM to 10 PM (or later, if we have the volunteers)

Saturday, March 30, 10 AM to 10 PM (or later, if we have the volunteers)

Sunday, March 31, 10 AM to 4 PM (Moving stuff to Go Center 4-6 PM)

Please note that this weekend also has the Easter holiday, so watch out for schedule conflicts.

Regards,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Class Tomorrow: Team Game!

Greetings Go Fans-
Tomorrow we are going to do something that we haven't done in a while; have everyone in the class play a "team" game. This is a variation on Guo Juan's "Survivor Go," where it doesn't really matter which team wins; rather a team's score is determined by the quality of each team member's individual moves. These points will be awarded based on your own individual skill level.  For example, if a 15k plays a stone for the black team that is joseki, but perhaps not the BEST joseki, the black team will earn a point. Conversely, if a 10k tenukis a local situation at a bad time, that 10k will lose a point for his/her team.

We've done this type of lesson a number of times in the past, and it is always fun for everyone. Come on down to the Go Center on Monday night and try to earn some points for your team! #goblackgoteam #gowhitegoteam

[Seattle Go Center] Yearly Meeting on Sunday, March 22 at 2 pm

Dear Members,

Our Yearly meeting is this coming up in 10 days, on Sunday March 22, at 2 p.m.  We will have snacks, a short slide show of recent events, and a business meeting that includes the election of three board members.  It should take about an hour.  We will stay open so you can play Go afterwards (of course).

Everybody is welcome, but we especially encourage voting members (yearly and lifetime members) to attend.  We need to get a 25% quorum of all our voting members to make the meeting official.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Lisa Go playing teaching games today Tuesday, March 10

Dear Members,

Our friend from Japan, Lisa Go, will be at the Go Center this Tuesday to play games with the very strong players, and teaching games with the rest of us.  Last week she arrived around 5:00 p.m.

Chris will be baking bread, and we will probably be ordering pizza at $2.50 a slice.  We have had a “quorum for pizza” the last two weeks, after a period of austerity in February.

So come visit!  We will be open from 1-10 p.m.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Class Monday: Tesuji Blitz!

Hi Go Players!

Tomorrow night's DDK class will be a tesuji workshop that I'm calling a "blitz." Unlike our "normal" workshops where I give you all a small collection of difficult problems to chew your way through, I'm going to be setting up 20-30 problems that are all much easier in terms of difficulty. It is my hope that each problem takes you no more than 1-2 minutes to solve. There should be a little bit of time for a quick game afterwards as well.

Come and try and get a high score at this Tesuji Blitz!
