[Seattle Go Center] Visiting Pro Tues Feb 7 and Wed Feb 8

Dear Members,

Chihyung Nam, a professional baduk player from Korea, and a Professor of Baduk Studies at Myongji University in Korea, will be visiting Seattle with her husband for about ten days.   She has visited us at least twice before.  She will be playing simultaneous games on Tuesday, Feb. 7, starting at 6:30 p.m., and leading a discussion on Wed., Feb. 8, starting at 7:00 p.m.

Ms. Nam wrote the book “Contemporary Go Terms”, which compares Go terminology across four languages:  English, Korean, Japanese and Chinese.  As far as I know, it is the only book of its kind.  It was published by Oromedia, but unfortunately it is out of print.  On Wed., Feb. 8 she will lead a discussion of “Contemporary Go Terms”, and  related issues with playing Go at international events.  We encourage players at all levels, and of course, of all languages, to come to this event.  It will be free.

Ms. Nam may be at the Go Center at other times; we will keep you posted.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Online instruction

A note from Oren:

Inseong Hwang is looking for another couple members for his American Yunguseng Dojang at

http://ayd.yunguseng.com/

Many members of the Seattle Go Center have been playing in his league over the past few years and received instruction.

You can see many examples of his teaching for free on Youtube  at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEpsC_-9indqRsOjYuFStBQ

He came and lectured at both Go Congress and the Seattle Go Center in 2015.  Both times, people enjoyed his teaching style and lectures.

Generally it's good to start when seasons begin but he has two openings in February he would like to get filled, ideally by KGS 1k and weaker.  If you're interested please let him know quickly.

Cheers,

Brian

Re: [ORE] Wild Talents First Edition

I would like to second this. I've spent many years building up a collection of pdf copies of all the books I own in print (luckily most of them are now quite old and the electronic versions not too expensive), but the two that I've never seen available are the Dune RPG and the first edition of Wild Talents. I've given up on the former, but if the latter were possible...

Good Afternoon Everyone,

I tried posting this earlier today without luck, hopefully it works this time.

I'm lucky enough to own a physical copy of the first edition of Wild Talents, and while not nearly as elegant or balanced as second edition, I find I prefer it.

My question is, was a pdf of this ruleset ever put together? I travel quite a bit and don't often have access to my physical copy, I would gladly pay for a pdf of even just the rule set without the world building chapters if Arc Dream were to offer it for sale. Is this a possibility?

Thanks in advance!

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: "Andrew Jackson Has to Go"

Hey Go Friends,

It has recently come to my attention that Andrew Jackson has been playing entirely too much chess as of late. So, I've decided to that he should have to play some more Go, and the best way for him to do it is through an exhibition game during my class! So come watch Andrew and yours truly battle it out on the Go board  in front of all of you. I hope to see you there!

[Seattle Go Center] Winners and Winners

Dear Members,

Here are the reports on two tournaments at the Go Center.

Way back on December 10, 2016 we had our 4th annual Gala Pair Go Tournament.  We had 22 players, and plenty of cake and raspberries for all.  Mark Richardson and Cat won at the third table, while Akira Sato and Mari McLellan won at the 2nd table.  Peter Nelson and Lily Berger won at the first table, repeating their 2015 victory.  Thanks to Bill and Anne Thompson, and Deborah Niedermeyer for organizing this.  Our next pair Go tournament will be in the late spring. It will be a “rengo” tournament – pair Go without the gender rules.

On Jan.  8, Peter Nelson 5d won again.  He beat Edward Kim 7d, the dean of Northwest Go players, to win the Open Section of the Jin Chen Memorial Tournament at the Seattle Go Center .  The players agreed that Kim played one slack move in the middle of a complicated fight between five unsettled groups, and Edward said “good job!” to Peter as he resigned. It was the first time Peter has beaten Edward in five tournament match-ups. Kim placed second, and Dengda Tang third in the Open Section.

In the Handicapped Sections, John Hogan took first place among the Single Digit Kyu Players.  John was visiting from Arizona, where he now lives.  It was very nice to see our former Go Center TD get to play three games without any worries about running the tournament.  Michael Fain placed 2nd and Eric Backus 3rd.

In the Double Digit Kyu Player section, Nathan Saritzky placed first, with Carl Anderson 2nd, and Ray Illian 3rd.  The Youth Prize went to Maya Altschuler, who had a 2-1 record.   Young Emma Huang also had a 2-1 record, but against weaker players. The tournament had 29 players.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] SDK Tonight - Endgame Practical Study

Hi all! We're going to experiment with something a bit different tonight.

I recently reviewed a game with one of my students which was decided in the end by a 0.5 point margin. In such an agonizingly close game, I saw many chances for both sides in the endgame stage to take the lead...

We're going to rewind that game about 50-75 moves from the end and play through it in pairs to see how our individual results vary from the actual result, discuss where the most important areas are and how to count them, and examine what the real result of the game should've been if both sides had played perfectly (or at least, as perfectly as an AGA 5d can play).

As always, we'll have time for game reviews - this would be a great opportunity to review any games you might have from last weekend's tournament!

Hope to see you tonight at 7pm!
Peter Nelson 5d

[Seattle Go Center] Youth 19x19 on Jan 22

Dear Parents and Players,

The Jan. 22  Youth 19x19 Tournament at the Seattle Go Center is a great opportunity for children who are getting serious about Go.   This tournament is more challenging than our fun 13x13 events, but it will still be oriented to young players. The games will be rated by the American Go Association (AGA).  The tournament, is open to all players under the age of 18 who can finish a 19x19 game.  The time periods will be faster than our usual tournament play (30 minutes to a side, rather than 45 minutes).  The overtime will be the same (5 periods of 30 seconds).  Players must be members of the American Go Association ($10/year), but the tournament is free.  To join the AGA, go to: https://www.usgo.org/members/join.  There will be book and equipment prizes.  Registration is at noon, on the day of the tournament.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: AlphaGo Strikes Back!

Hi Go Fans-

Please forgive the obligatory Star Wars reference, but a whole new collection of AlphaGo games against the world's top pros was unleashed upon us this week (and I saw the new Star Wars film over break).

Anyway, we'll be discussing some of this version of AlphaGo's new tendencies (discoveries?) and look at one of her recent games. If you want to see how the world's top player (robot?) is beating her human opponents, you won't want to miss this class! Additionally, because of the MLK holiday coming up on the 16th, our next class after this one won't be until Jan 23rd.

[Seattle Go Center] More info about Sunday tournament

Dear Go Players,

Our big tournament of the year, the Jin Chen Memorial, will be this Sunday, January 8, with registration from 10 to 10:45 that day. There will be an Open Tournament, and a Handicapped Tournament.  As usual, we welcome players from all backgrounds, at all strengths.  I expect you will hear English, Japanese, Korean and Chinese spoken at this tournament.  We will probably have players who can translate for German, French and Russian speakers.

The Open Tournament will have a first place prize of $300, if there are at least 4 players in the Open.  Registration in the Open Tournament is limited to the top 8 players who are interested in playing, based on their AGA rating, or if they are players from another country, based on their other ratings.  (The TD will make this determination.)

The Handicapped Tournament will have multiple sections.  Double digit kyu players are welcome to play.  Children are welcome to play if they can handle the long game times (45 minutes to a side, with 5 periods of 30 seconds byoyomi), and they don’t mind playing adults.  There is a separate prize of $50 for the youth (under 18) with the best won-lost record.

Please make sure your AGA membership is up to date.  https://www.usgo.org/members/login

We recommend that you bring food to the tournament.  If your first game runs long, you may not have time to go out before the 2nd round.  General Admission is $15, while youth and voting members pay $10.  We will finish around 5:30 pm.

We hope to see you at the Jin Chen Tournament!

Cheers,

Brian
