Re: [ORE] Damage penality
Hi. We tried a sample combat to grasp the rules yesterday. Doc jurassic vs wrait.
They started at about one move of distance. Doc declared first, transformation. Wraith declared an attack.
Wraith went first with a wider set then the 2x10 of doc, hit it and removed a die from doc set, ruining it and stopping the transformation. Is this correct?

[Seattle Go Center] SDK study group this Wednesday
Hey folks,
I will be hosting a series of SDK-level study groups this winter, the first of which will be this Wednesday at 6:30p. These study groups will be every other Wednesday, when Drew is not teaching class. For these study groups, we will focus on a different topic each week and discuss some relevant problems and positions during class. Afterwards, there will be a chance to play some games against other players of similar strength.
For the first couple of meetings, I would like to explore followups to common shimaris and the effects of surrounding enemy stones on a corner previously considered "safe."
Since this is a new format, I am open to experimentation. Please come and share your ideas. And play some go, of course!
See you all Wednesday,
Lucy

[Seattle Go Center] We will be open for casual games on Monday, Jan. 15
Dear Members,
While there is no DDK class with Nick tonight, we will be open for a Board of Directors meeting, which starts at 6:30. If you
want to play a casual game between 6 - 8:30, perhaps later, that is fine with us.
Cheers,
Brian

[Seattle Go Center] 40 Players at Jin Chen Tournament
Dear Go Center Members,
We had 40 players at the Jin Chen Tournament, held last Sunday, Jan. 7. Eight players were in the Open Section, with five them 6D or stronger. The winner of the Open Section was Sorin Gherman, with a 3-0 record. Three players had a 2-1 record: Xinlei (Alex) Liu, Yue Zhang, and Guangqiu Liang. Alex was award 2nd place, because he was undefeated in the first two rounds. He also had the highest “SOSW” (sum of opponent scores) of the three players. Sorin Gherman hasn’t played much at the Seattle Go Center, but he did come to the Anniversary Tournament in October, 2017, when his record was 1-2. He also played in the U.S. Open Masters Division in San Diego in 2017.
We had three handicapped sections. The top section, Dan to 2 Kyu, was won by Xingyu Liu, with second place to Chengxuan Li. The middle section, 4 Kyu to 9 Kyu, was won by John Hogan, who was visiting from Arizona. John, a long time supporter of the Go Center, also won last year. Second place in the middle section went to Ray Illian, and third place to young Brian Dai. The Double Digit Kyu section was won by Austin Li, with second place going to Rodney Deacon.
The Children’s Prize went to Xingyu Liu, who also won the top handicapped section. He will age out of the under 18 category next year.
The Open Section has been rated already by the American Go Association. The handicapped sections will probably be rated next week; all our players are now up to date with the AGA.
The next tournament with prizes will be the Youth Tournament on the afternoon of March 25. For adults, the next big tournament at the Go Center is the Spring Tournament, which will be held all day May 6.
Cheers,
Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Big Tournament this Sunday Jan. 7 - Open to all
Dear Go Players,
The Jin Chen Tournament is the biggest tournament of the year at the Seattle Go Center, and it is happening this Sunday, Jan. 7 at the Go Center. This tournament has cash prizes, with the first place prize in the open section winning $300. The open section will be limited to the top 8 players who register. There will also be cash prizes in the handicapped sections, and a $50 prize for the youth player with the best won lost record. Of course, youth players can also win a regular prize at the same time.
There is a fee of $10 for youth and voting members, and $15 for all others. The tournament is AGA rated, so please make sure your AGA (American Go Association) membership is up to date before you come. Registration for the tournament is the day of the event, from 10 to 10:30 a.m. The tournament should be over by 5:30.
This tournament is open to all who pay the fee, and who are AGA members. There is no citizenship requirement for our tournaments. The AGA membership form asks about citizenship, but that is only an issue for a few national tournaments, not for us. It is also my understanding that players who are not U.S. citizens can accept prize money. The rules for prizes are much less restrictive than for employment.
Cheers,
Brian Allen
