Re: [ORE] [Wild Talents] Help Understanding Booster

Right now I'd be more inclined to believe I'm missing something than a mistake. Though it was just clarification since I'll hopefully be running a game in this system soon, and one of my players is wanting to do a speedster. Not to that level but in case he ever decided to go that route, or I want to throw a faster speedster at him as a nemesis. Thanks for the reply, really like this system.

The stated speed at 4 dice in a power is 20 yards per round, which equates to 20 mph. Thirteen levels of Booster, as it is on the table, shoots the speed well beyond what light actually travels at. Like I said, I'm being pedantic but I'm just trying to understand how it's meant to be thirteen, as even 1 die in a Miracle requires only nine levels to get it past the speed of light.

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Tomorrow: Phone a Friend Go

Hey Gang-

During tomorrow night's DDK class I want to try something new that I've never done before: "Phone a Friend Go." Here's how it works, you and a similar-rated opponent play a game of go. But up to two times during the game, you can essentially call a "timeout" and discuss the current board situation with me. You and I will try to identify the best move, plan out a grand strategy, or just figure out a way out of trouble. The downside to "phoning a friend" will be that your opponent will get to hear everything that we discuss as well; but since you are doing the "phoning" on your turn, you should be best able to take advantage of the information gained.

I think this could be a lot of fun.

Also, I am booked on the evening of May 4th so I am planning on canceling class during the following week.

[Seattle Go Center] Cherry Blossom Festival this Friday, Sat, Sun

Dear Members,

We will be teaching Go at the Cherry Blossom Festival this Friday - Sunday, April 24- 26, from 10 am to 6 pm.   We will be in the Seattle Center Armory, upstairs in the "Loft" -- the same place as two years ago (and the years previous to that).  One floor up from the food court.

The festival is free, but parking is expensive in the area.  The 1st Ave North Parking Garage is probably your best bet if you are coming by car.  Here is a map: http://www.seattlecenter.com/downloads/sc_map_color_gates.pdf

We can probably use more teachers on Saturday Afternoon, and Sunday Afternoon.

Our tournament will be a week later, back at the Seattle Go Center.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Paid Private Instruction Expands

Dear Members,

Paid private Go lessons are now available at the Seattle Go Center on Friday evening, Saturday morning, and Sundays.  We will continue our extensive program of free group lessons on other days.  Private lessons are great if you want to commit to an individualized program of instruction.  Our teachers are well qualified for the levels they teach, and they are committed to finding effective ways to improve your game.

Jon Boley 5d will continue teaching students at all levels and all ages two Sundays a month.  (Jon travels from Bellingham to give these lessons.)  Peter Nelson 5d is now available to teach single digit kyu players and low dan players on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings.  He prefers students who are junior high school age or older.  You can see his "Go personality" in the youtubes at https://www.youtube.com/user/longstridebaduk/.  John Richards 7k specializes in teaching children (age 5 - 10), but he is available to all ages who are beginners or double digit kyu players on Tuesdays before 1 pm, and Saturdays.  Larry Eclipse 6k is available to teach beginners up to double digit kyu players of all ages on Fridays and Saturdays.  He may also be available on Monday and Wednesday afternoons.

The instructors will be establishing the fees for their instruction, but the minimum charge is $20/hr.  The Go Center will be not be open to the public during private instruction times. Parents (or guardians) of children under 16 having lessons at the Go Center must stay with their child during the lesson, unless there are two other adults present during the lesson. (Yes, we have wi-fi and a couch.)   If you are interested in private Go lessons, you may contact the instructors directly, or you may contact me, Brian Allen, at 206 632-1122, or by email at the address below.

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Class Monday: Andrew Jackson Sucks At Go!

Hey everyone!

Tomorrow's DDK class will welcome the return of Andrew Jackson. For those of you who do not know, Andrew is a very strong go player who teaches the single-digit Kyu class on Wednesdays and also posts some of his witty and interesting lectures on YouTube as well.

Andrew and I will play a game live for the entertainment and enjoyment of you all. We have done this several times in this past, and Andrew and I provide our own live commentary (and/or jokes at each other's expense). Come watch us play a friendly game and find out for yourself exactly how much Andrew Jackson sucks at go!

[Seattle Go Center] Cherry Blossom Festival Outreach April 24, 25, 26

Dear Members,

Our next outreach event will be on Friday, April 24 – Sunday, April 26, from 10 am – 6 pm each day,  at the Cherry Blossom Festival.  This is held at the Seattle Center (near the Space Needle).  We will be in our traditional space, in what is now called the “Armory Loft”.  This is upstairs from our location last year, when we were on the “Armory Main Floor” (food court).

The Cherry Blossom Festival is the biggest public Japanese cultural celebration of the year in Seattle.  http://www.cherryblossomfest.org/

This year, they are not doing the scheduled class visits on Friday.  So we will be teaching individuals and small groups all three days.  We have room for 6 teachers.  Please contact me if you are interested in helping out (and haven’t gotten in touch already).  Mark R. is planning a car pool.

Our Spring Tournament is the following Sunday, on May 3, at the Seattle Go Center, with registration from 10:00 – 10:45.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Class Monday - The 2014 Oza Title

Hi Everyone-
Tomorrow I want to show you guys a pro game at the lecture board between Iyama Yuta, the Japanese uber-wunderkind who currently holds almost every major Japanese Go title, and an upstart challenger, Murakawa Daisuke.

As you may know, Japanese Go has succumbed to both China and Korea in international play in recent years, and Iyama Yuta has been Japan's last great hope to cling to international-level play. Murakawa is less known, but his recent records have been astounding. Come review the title game between these great young, fierce players played in December's Oza tournament!

[Seattle Go Center] More about Self-Paired Games

Dear Members,

We have a system that enables you to play AGA rated games with another AGA member at the Go Center, anytime that the Go Center is open. It is called "Self-Paired Games". We tested the system last year, and it worked. Now is the time to make Self-Paired Games a regular feature of the Center.

To use the system, players find their opponents on their own. You may want to arrange with a friend to meet at the Go Center. Both players must be current members of the AGA, and that membership must be verifiable at http://www.usgo.org/search-ratings. (Note that this can take a while after one renews or joins.) Games are played with a clock, with a minimum of 30 minutes to a side, and without help from kibbitzers. The results are reported on the "AGA Self-Paired Game Reporting Form", which is on the 2nd desk near the entrance. The form is put in the jar on that desk. The results will be submitted to the AGA on a regular basis.

I think that the quiet times at the Go Center are a very good time for these games. That would include early on Tuesdays (1-4 p.m.), and most of Thursdays (2-9 p.m.), including Thursday evenings.

Cheers,
Brian Allen
manager@seattlego.org

I want to remind everyone that the Go center is open tomorrow  for casual game play and self-paired AGA rated games. Plenty of parking spots are available on Thursday nights.

We are continuing to provide instruction for beginners. Tailored explanations are provided for new students while returning students often are paired in games which we  discuss afterwards.

[Seattle Go Center] Rating Tournament this Sunday April 12 at 10 am

Dear Go Players,

Our Monthly Ratings Tournament is coming up this Sunday at 10:00 am.  This is a change of pace from our usual “first Sunday of the month” pattern, due to Sakura Con and the Easter Holiday.

This is a great way to play some intense Go face to face. 3 rounds, Japanese rules. The tournament is free, but you need to pay for your visit to the Go Center, or be a voting member of the Go Center, or be a "new member" which gives you ten free visits.

Registration is from 10:00 - 10:45 sharp.  If you come before 12:30 and register, you will probably be able to play in the second round.

Rounds are at 11 am, 1:30 pm, and 3:30 pm.  If your first game runs long, you do not have much time for lunch.  We recommend that you bring food to the Go Center, rather than planning on going out to get lunch.

AGA membership is required; please check to see if your membership is current, and try to renew it online if it needs to be updated.  More info on membership is at www.usgo.org.  You can join the AGA or renew in person at the Go Center as well, but please come early to do that.

You do not have play all three rounds - just be sure to tell the Tournament Director what your plans are.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: Ladders!

Hi Gang-
Tomorrow's Double-Digit Kyu class will be a workshop all about ladders. We will look at a series of problems and ask ourselves a seemingly simple question, "Does the ladder here work?" Several problems will require that you read several dozen moves ahead to determine the outcome (though, since most of the moves are 100% forced, this isn't as difficult as it sounds).

Ladders are an integral part of playing a competitive game of go. Knowing a given ladder's status during actual play will give you much better insights into shape, ladder-breakers, and strategies. I hope to see you there!

[Seattle Go Center] Online League with Instruction

Dear Go Players,

Some of our members have been playing in  the online “Yunguseng Dojang”, and they really like it.  There is now room for more players.  The instruction is in English, and the skill level of our players is from strong kyu player to 6 dan.  More information is below.

Cheers,

Brian Allen

General Manager, Seattle Go Center

Yunguseng Dojang is an online league run by former Korean yunguseng (student to become a professional go player), Inseong Hwang, who now lives in Europe teaching go.  He has been running this online league since 2011 and currently has 72 players in European time zone and 36 players in the American time zone.  He has been the number 1 player in European rankings and has a good record against professionals living in Europe.

He describes the system this way...

The basic system of Yunguseng Dojang is,

Each of the five games played per month will be personally reviewed!

Nine live, interactive lectures each season

After complete the season(3 months), take the personal Go report!  http://eyd.yunguseng.com/system.html#personalreport

There are more than 100 lectures and over 2,000 game review videos!

Five of us in Seattle have already been doing this league, and have participated for a few months.  I think it's a great system for getting stronger and learning more about go.

Inseong teaches in a KGS room using audio.  As described, he does 3 lectures a month on Monday evenings.  We also play games against 5 other opponents every month and all games are reviewed.  Some are live at night with interaction with all the students and some are posted to the web as offline reviews.  Top 2 players in each division go up and bottom 2 go down, so the games feel pretty important and are generally taken seriously.
