[Seattle Go Center] Beat the heat

Meet and greet other beginners and learn to play go tonight   from 6:30 to 9pm. Beginners can get one on one go instruction or play other beginners and get some tips and pointers.

If we're lucky some advanced players may drop by and give us the benefit of their high  kyu or Dan level wisdom.

We are also open for casual game play from 2pm to 9pm.

As usual, our weekly schedule is on the right hand side of the home page:

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: "Opening Theory and Punishments (Part 1)"

(alternate title: "The DDK Player's Toolbox")

Helllllllloooo Double-Digit Kyu Class!

You know what time it is. This week we're going to be talking about common opening misunderstandings and mistakes, as well as how to punish. This will probably be my last week teaching (next week is the Go Congress) and so this probably the last chance for me to review a game of yours. BRING ONE IN!!! Even if you already have in the past.

Looking forward to seeing you all!

[Seattle Go Center] Place to stay needed

Subject:                Seattle hostel?

Date:     Fri, 24 Jul 2015 18:14:53 -0700

From:    Vincent Eisman <vincenteisman@gmail.com>

To:         Chris Kirschner <chrisk.aga@comcast.net>

Hi, Chris,

My wife and daughter are up in Seattle for a couple weeks. They are staying at an airbnb (sort of like a hostel situation, if you're unfamiliar with the term) for their time there, but their accommodations for tomorrow night (Saturday) suddenly fell through. Do you know any people in the Go playing community (or otherwise) who house people on occasion? She would be happy to compensate. They also have a camping equipment if there might be anyone with land to allow them to pitch a tent.

Thanks,

Vincent

[Seattle Go Center] Two pros visiting next week July 28 - 29.

Dear Members,

Our good friend Ryo Maeda 6P, and a fellow pro from the Kansai Ki-in, Koyo Hoshikawa 3P, will be visiting the Seattle Go Center next week, on their way to the Go Congress in Minnesota.

On Tuesday, July 28, they will be playing simultaneous games in the afternoon, starting at 3:00 p.m.  There may be more simultaneous games in the evening, depending on how they are feeling after their long journey. The fee for a game is $10.

On Wednesday, July 29, Maeda Sensei will give a lecture at 7:00 p.m.  He is one of the most popular lecturers at the US Go Congress, and we highly recommend this evening at the Go Center.  The lecture will be aimed at Single Digit Kyu Players, but all are welcome.  General Admission is $10, while students and voting members pay $5.

We look forward to meeting Mr. Koyo Hoshikawa.  He is 26 years old,  from Kagawa prefecture, and he is a disciple of  Mr. Yuuichi Sonoda 9P.  He comes from an accomplished family.  His father was Nobuaki Hoshikawa 9P, and he has two brothers who are also professionals.

After the Go Congress in early August, we will have more distinguished visitors.  Check out our events schedule at:

[Seattle Go Center] News about Tuesdays at Go Center

Dear Go Players,

The Go Center will continue to be open on Tuesdays, even though many of our volunteers will be in Minnesota for the US Go Congress, which happens Aug 1-9.

http://www.gocongress.org/

We will continue to order pizza at 6:30.  However, our generous bread maker, Chris K., has already taken off on a road trip to Minnesota, so we do not have a plan for fresh bread.  We are very open to potluck donations of food to tide us over until Chris returns.  As usual, we will be open from 1 – 10 pm.

Cheers,

Brian

We have agreed to teach Go to beginners at the “Living Well Health Fair” in the Beacon Hill area on Saturday, July 25.  This will use our usual “Capture Go” lesson.  Set up for the event is at 10:30, we will be done at 4:00.  The Health Fair will be providing a free lunch of Japanese style chicken curry rice.

The Fair is at the Gym at Blaine Memorial United Methodist, 3001 24th Avenue South, Seattle, WA 98144.

If you could help out, that would be great.  If you could give John Richards, our other teacher, a ride from Phinney Ridge, that would be even better.

[Seattle Go Center] Two Workshops in August

Dear Members,

Some of the strongest players in the Western World will be teaching weekend workshops at the Seattle Go Center in August.  They will be traveling to Seattle after attending the US Go Congress in early August in Minnesota.  Both workshops will be taught in English.

On August 15th and 16th, Saturday and Sunday, Myungwan Kim will be teaching a workshop for players 3 kyu and stronger.  Myungwan won the US Open in 2008, 2009, and 2010.  He is a 9 dan Korean Pro who is now living in California. He will be assisted by his former student Mark Lee, who won the US Open in 2014 after being undefeated in 9 games.  Mr. Kim and Mr. Lee will play simultaneous games with the workshop participants, and then analyze the games afterwards.  There will also be lectures on the Korean style opening, and analysis of other contemporary games.  More information is here:

http://www.seattlego.org/events/wkshp-myungwan-kim/

The next weekend, Aug. 22 and 23, the highest rated Go player living in Europe, Inseong Hwang, will be giving a workshop for players 15 kyu and up.  Mr. Hwang has an on-line Go school, the American Yunguseng Dojang, which three of our members highly recommend.  This workshop will feature games between workshop members, with Mr. Hwang providing analysis and lessons.

http://www.seattlego.org/events/inseong-hwang-wkshp/

Please note that the deadline for the Early Registration Discount is coming up soon for both workshops.  Register now to save $10.

Cheers,

Brian

Re: [Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: "Invasions (Part 1)"

EDIT:
(alternate title: "What you need to know to wing it.")

Hellooooo Class!

Another week, another brand spankin' new DDK class. This week I'll be talking the rudimentary basics of invading your opponent's framework, and afterwards doing game reviews. As always I encourage everyone to bring in a record of a game they've played recently (anything from a sheet of paper to a laptop), but it is in NO WAY at all a course requirement. Again I'll have my laptop with me, so if you'd rather email me your game than bring it in, that will work just fine.

Looking forward to seeing you all!

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: "Whole Board Thinking And Intuition (Part 1)"

(alternate title: "Don't break the chain!")

Hello Everyone!

DDK Mondays again continue tomorrow, the 13th, with me, Cullen Mott, substituting for Nick Sibicky.
This week I will be directing a shorter lecture on tactics in the opening and–this time forreals (I swear!)–doing game reviews. Again if you don't have a game to bring in don't sweat it, still come. I'll have my computer this time so if you'd rather email me your game record instead of bringing it in on an iPad or a laptop that'll work just fine.

Round 2 starts at 6:30, look forward to seeing you!

http://www.cafebonappetit.com/lewisandclark/

Note that Maggie's doesn't open until noon on the weekend, so if you need an infusion of caffeine before your first round, bring something along.

CHILDREN: We definitely want to encourage children to play and enjoy the game. We also want adults to be able to concentrate without excessive distraction or disruption. We therefore must insist that all children under 9 be supervised by a non-playing adult.

[Seattle Go Center] SDK Tonight: Mini Chinese Formation

Hi all,

Tonight we'll start by reviewing the basics of endgame - how to determine the value of a move, what some of the most common endgame moves are worth, and how to think about sente & gote toward the end of the game.

Then we'll take a look at the Mini Chinese formation, which was extremely popular in professional go somewhat recently (i.e. this century) and is still occasionally played today. There are a few resources on the web that'll give you a taste of what to expect:

Sensei's library: http://senseis.xmp.net/?SmallChineseFuseki
Charles Matthews article (briefly discusses the mini-Chinese in the second half of the article): http://gobase.org/studying/articles/matthews/fuseki/06/
Dwyrin lecture: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toW2Q97sgiM

We'll take a look at the key concepts to keep in mind when playing the Mini Chinese and some of the most often played lines. Hope to see you at the Go center tonight!

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: "Choosing the Right Joseki (Part 1)"

(alternate title: "how to avoid choosing a joseki that will leave you feeling like a sad panda in need of a pint of Ben and Jerry's ice cream and the emotional catharsis of scrolling through thousands of images of adorable kittens getting into shenanigans: The Lecture")

Hello Everyone!

Nick Sibicky's DDK Class will be continuing tomorrow the 6th at the same time, 6:30 PM, with me, Cullen Mott, the new substitute teacher-senpai-person-guy. Nick is taking the rest of the summer off and will return–I believe–in September.
Tomorrow I will be giving a lecture and doing game reviews. I really really encourage you to bring in games that you've played (the more recent the better) as I have personally experienced that having a game reviewed by a stronger player is one of the cleanest ways to get better. If you do not have a game to bring, it's no problem, still come! (there will just be less of me talking)

I am excited and I look forward to seeing you all!

Re: [ORE] Character Creation

I agree, that is why I was planning the character creation session as a group activity.  I figured, as a group, everyone could give their concepts and tweak them as they compare what they wanted with each other. Then I would focus on the actual system side of it all, since I am most familiar with the ruleset.

Anyone have any thoughts on the idea of limiting dice instead of points?  I feel this may help me limit the power level so as to be appropriate to the setting I wish to run, least that is the hope.

The whole reason I am considering not using points is for the exact reason you mention, depending how well you grasp the system, you can get cosmic might or street vigilante for the same point expenditure.  Trying to avoid that kind of discrepancy between player's skill.

Also playing with the idea of, instead of points, giving players a number of dice to distribute between there stats and abilities, including a number of wiggle and hard dice.

Any advice would be very appreciated.
