[Seattle Go Center] Spring Tournament this Sunday, May 6

Dear Go Players,

The Spring Tournament is one of our three big tournaments of the year -- there will be cash prizes, plus book prizes and
equipment prizes and with special prizes for youth. No matter what your level is, this is a great way to play some intense
Go face to face. We will have three rounds and use Japanese rules. Last year, we had 34 players ranging from 7 dan to
22 kyu.

The Open Section has all even games, and is limited to the top 8 players who want to play in it. First place in the Open
Section wins a prize of $150. (If there are at least 4 people in the Open Section.) There will be no second prize. The
Handicapped Section will have book and equipment prizes. Everybody who wins three games will be invited to choose a
book or equipment prize. The Youth Prize is for players under 18. It is $50, and it will be divided among all youth
players who win all three of their games. Youth players can win regular prizes concurrently.

Entry fee: $10 general admission, $5 youth and voting members. Registration is from 10 -10:45 sharp. First round 11:00
am, second round 1:30 pm, third round 3:30 pm.

This is an American Go Association rated tournament, and AGA membership is required; please make sure your
membership is current. More info on membership at www.usgo.org If your first game runs long, you do not have
much time for lunch. We recommend that you bring food to the Go Center, rather than planning on going out to get
lunch.

Cheers,
Brian Allen

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: Urgent Moves 2

Greetings Go Fans-
Last week's workshop on "urgent moves" was something of a hit; and I think most people in attendance agreed that they want more! So I'm queuing up for another round this week. Don't miss out!

Also, on May 21st we will be recording my 300th Nick Sibicky Go Lecture on YouTube. We will be doing something special that night (Brian told me that there also may be some free pizza involved), you won't want to miss this celebration. Mark your calendars now!

[Seattle Go Center] Another Volunteer Welcome for School Near Issaquah

Dear Teachers,

The Seattle Go Center has been teaching a Go club at Challenger Elementary School, which is about 5 miles NE of Issaquah, on Wednesday afternoons.   We have 15 eager students. We would like to have another volunteer help us with the last two Wednesdays, April 25, and May 2. You could help students identify dead stones, and help them finish 13x13 games.  The session is from 1:30 to 2:15 pm.  We have a car pool leaving the Go Center at 12:30 p.m. So far, the traffic has not been bad traveling either way.  (Apparently morning rush hour and evening rush hour have not completely merged on the Eastside.)  If you want to come directly to Challenger School, we are at 25200 SE Klahanie Blvd., Sammamish, WA 98075.  We meet outside the school at about 1:25, and then go to the Library.  Bill Mokin, a teacher at Challenger School, is the organizer of this club, and he helps us teach Go as well.

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] SDK Wednesday: 3-5 joseki

Hi all,

A few folks have asked me recently to do a bit on 3-5 joseki, as it seems to be a common area of mystery to many players. To that end, I've prepared a bit of material this week covering some common patterns and interesting directions to enquire, which I hope will be both fun and informative. As always, there will be time for casual games and some personalized instruction afterwards, so I hope you can come by!

[Seattle Go Center] Go Center Hiring Program Manager

Dear Go Center Members,

I have been Manager of the Go Center for almost 10 years now.  While I have enjoyed my long employment with the Seattle Go Center, and I am very proud of our many accomplishments, I would like to scale back my responsibilities in the fall of this year and do more photography.  We will divide my current job as General Manager into two part-time positions: “Operations Manager” and “Program Manager”.   I would like to continue as the Operations Manager, with responsibility for the building, maintenance, bookkeeping, and tax reports.  We are looking to hire a new Program Manager.

The Program Manager would schedule, organize, and promote all our classes, open play times, events, workshops, go clubs, and outreach.  This is a paid part time position (50 hours a month) with flexible hours and some work required on weekends and evenings.  The Program Manager would manage the email list, the website, and our social media.  The Program Manager also has responsibility for encouraging and supporting diverse membership in the Go Center.  I am happy to report that I have had great support from both volunteers and our paid day managers on these projects, and so the list of tasks is long but not impossible.  I think the Program Manager position could be filled by somebody whose day job does not require long hours.

If you are interested in the new Program Manager position, please contact me for more information.  We are definitely interested in filling this position by the fall, and an earlier start is possible.  Interviews for this position will be scheduled starting May 5, 2018.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: Urgent Moves Workshop

Greetings Go Players-
Tomorrow's DDK Class will get away from the pattern-practicing and the historical games we've been covering over the past few weeks. Instead, we will analyze a number of whole-board positions and try to identify the URGENT MOVE that needs to be played. Based on my own experience of walking around the Go center and glancing at several kyu games during the course of the evening, I have concluded that kyu players are in desperate need of more practice of this.

I hope to see you there!

[Seattle Go Center] Cherry Blossom Festival Outreach and Games This Weekend

Dear Volunteers,

We have plenty of room at Cherry Blossom Festival, so more teachers are welcome.   This is the Japanese Culture festival that is in several buildings at Seattle Center, underneath the Space Needle.  We are in the Armory in the “Loft”, one floor above the food court.  We are basically in the same place as last year, but we are away from the door this time, which will be a good thing when the Taiko drumming starts!  We will be teaching until 5 pm today, Friday, and from 10 – 5 on both Saturday, April 21, and Sunday, April 22.  Right now, our three teachers are very busy.  We have three teachers scheduled for tomorrow as well.

Notes on handicapped access:  at present, only the old elevator at the north end of the building is working.  When you take the elevator, select “3”; it will take you to the newly renovated “Loft”, which is also labeled “2”.  I am not making this up.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] SDK tomorrow: How to (not) play against the carpenter’s square

Hey folks,

Let's get together tomorrow to talk about the carpenter's square, one of the more complex corner shapes that frequently occurs in games. Is it dead/ko/alive? How many different ways can you kill it? (hint: there are several ways to start a ko). What if there are outside liberties? What if there are missing pieces?

We'll start with some basic positions and problems. This might turn into a two part series covering all the variations and situational moves.

Afterwards, there will be time for quick games.

See you then!

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: 4-4/High-Pincer Josekis!

Hey Go Fans-
So we had a pretty big turnout for last week's Joseki class (about 15 people!) and we didn't get to practice all of the Joseki I had planned for. So this week, we are going to focus on 4-4/low-approach/high-pincer josekis. We will familiarize ourselves with the patterns, you will practice copying them onto your boards, and then we will try them out in some games. If you feel like you are currently dipping your big toe into the joseki "pool," this class is for you! I hope to see you there!

Re: [Seattle Go Center] There will be a breaking into DDK class this Thursday

There WILL be the usual breaking into DDK class tonight for complete beginners wishing to learn to play go.

Tonight's class  shouldn't be confused with the Monday night DDK class which is  also suitable for SDK's nor should it be confused with the other Thursday night  class for DDK's called "Breaking into SDK"  which should be called  "Breaking OUT of SDK into DLR" since all the students have already broken INTO SDK status nor should tonight's class be confused with the Wednesday night class for SDK's, DDK's,DLR's and anyone else who wants to have a good time.

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: 4-4 Pincer Josekis

Hey Go Fans-

I know at the last class I said that we were going to do a "workshop" style class this week. But it turns out I lied about that. Instead, I'm going to hold a lecture reviewing some of the most common 4-4 / low-approach / pincer josekis. I see kyu players getting into trouble all the time with these, and it will be worth investigating some patterns. Afterward, there will be some time for games, during which I will REQUIRE all opening moves to be played on 4-4 points so that all players will have ample opportunity to apply the just-reviewed josekis.

I hope to see you there!

[Seattle Go Center] SDK workshop tomorrow 6:30p

Hey folks,

Tomorrow I'll be back to host another SDK workshop. I would like to review a recent pro game between Kim Jiseok and Ke Jie, the current 3rd and 2nd ranked players in the world respectively.

This game has a very straightforward story and intelligible moves. Early on, it's solid territory versus giant moyo. Later, it's an exercise in using aji.

After the review, we'll have time for games. Hope to see you all tomorrow!

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: 400 Years A-Go

Greetings Go Fans!
I'll be returning to teaching tomorrow from my spring break and will continue our series of looking at the evolution of Go through history. Some of you may feel like looking at strong play from the past is no longer relevant in the age of AlphaGo, but I assure you it is not. Many of these games showcase extremely strong reading ability, intuition, and attention to shape. I know that I am always enamored with how our Go ancestors make good shape, even in tough situations.

I hope you will come join me in learning from our past masters!
